tape over pickup

Why does Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert, have a tiny bit of tape och the treble side of the pickups?

it's so the high e string doesnt catch on the pickup during bends/trem abuse.

Dimebag Darrel uses this too. When you have your pickups raised really high and you use the whammy bar alot, or pick really hard on occasion the strings will be caught on the underside of the pickup. this tape is merely to avoid this. To note dimebag picks so hard he has to put it on the low e side as well.

but Paul Gilbert doesn't use the trem...

IMO, techs paste tape to block the pickup firmly on its place and/or parallel to the strings (it often happens that the pickup doesnt stand parallel to the strings).

but again, Paul Gilbert's got direct-mounted pickups... maybe the tape keeps the pickup from wearing by heavy picking... who knows...

You dont have to use the trem to do this nuno. Ive done it before without touching the trem . Since magnets are beleived to throw in a curve it doesnt matter anyways. It wouldnt matter how much they moved as long as they were in a 4 mm range[/list]

you mean that strings might get hooked in the pickups' underside?
