Testing whether pickups work

I'll be wiring up a JEM-style guitar this summer, and I won't have a neck for it until a few months after the pickups are put in. Does anyone know of a way to see if the pickups are all wired/functioning properly WITHOUT a neck or strings?

Plug in and tap the poles with one of your allen wrenches. You get the same sound that vai gets when the goes down and the strings go slack and hit the pups.

You can also use a TV/stereo remote control close to the pickups, it'll beep when you hold a button. Seriously.

That sounds neat. I will have to try it when I get home tonight.
