the NORTON really suprised me!

I finally got to try a regular NORTON in the bridge spot
this thing is very underated it has that nastiest harmonics i ever heard
it is very similar to a duncan custom but is smoother and more paf sounding
it has a strong clean tone that is tight and still open sounding and has a perfect output not too hot, not too low
reminds me a lot of EVH or satch's tone on steriods
it is a keeper and highly recomended for anyone who like both the older PAF's and the more modern pups out these days
it is a perfect marriage of old and new in one pup!

Re: the NORTON really suprised me!

The Norton is my go-to bridge pickup. Very underrated, in my opinion. it's got nasty harmonics, lots of mids, some warmth, and good clarity. It's kind of like a mix of the Tone Zone and the Fred, only less bassy and muddy. I really don't know why it's not more popular.

Re: the NORTON really suprised me!

i had one , it was cool but not totally the thing for my rig at the time . it sounded like a fred and tone zone put together , which i think is actaully how dimarzio describes it on thier site . It had some cool harmonics and was sort of rounded like the tone zone but the cut bass got me because i was already playing a somewhat mid heavy amp .

I can say i wouldn't get another one .

Re: the NORTON really suprised me!

I like this description of the Norton the best:

The Norton is, for lack of better description, the bastard child that would occur if a Tone Zone got it on with a FRED. It's got the harmonics of the FRED, but the output and a bit of low-end balls of the Tone Zone. Although, it's a bright pickup overall. It's got the nice midrange crunch needed for good overdrive and distortion, and a very distinctly PAF aftertaste.

I like what I hear from you about Norton!... I have been playing Pearly Gates for years... But I'm just wanting to try some DiMarzios... somewhat close to the PG's. Plus... DiMarzio's wiring diagrams are so much easier to read! If David Grissom really used a Norton at some point... and I can recreate that nasty gain he gets... I'll be happy. Ibanez SZ520, Fulltone Dirtboxes, Vintage Marshalls...

It's does have nice cleans and harmonics; it might be a bit tame for me. I play southern metal and progressive rock through a DSL 100 and am considering trying a Super 3 in place of the Norton. It is awesome if you want good harmonics from a medium output pickup.

Re: the NORTON really suprised me!

I put my Pearly Gates back in... but since then I have acquired a PRS CU22. It has a lot more bass and less mid response from my SZ520... plus the 5 way switch... I'm hoping that the Norton and Air Norton will work well with it. At the moment I also have a Pearly Gates in my PRS bridge and a Jazz in the neck, with out the 5 way. I would like to find someone that has tried this in their PRS. The Norton's were a little to thick for me in the SZ520... I need a bit more chime... maybe they will work better in the PRS.
