Time for a new pickup? Evolution?

So I'm kinda thinking of getting a new pickup for my bridge I'll give you a little history first.

My previous guitar was a JEM 555 with EVO's in the bridge and neck. Although I had been playing guitar for quite a while I had little experience with tone. I joined a band the day I bought the guitar and not long after 'upgraded' to an EMG 81 in the bridge. Instantly I thought "man I could get a some deep palm mutes through the cranked up Marshall". I played like this for a year and then bought a RGT42FMTLF (man that's a mouthful). The pickups were the cheap Ibanez ones so I returned my JEM to stock form and put the EMG in my new guitar. When it came time to sell my JEM I set it up and started playing it again. By this time I had become much more of a lead player. I thought wow...these EVO's are nice pickups. There is so much more life in the higher notes where the EMG sounds sterile and like a lazer beam the Dimarzio sounds like a chainsaw. Many people find the EMG active pickups to be more aggressive and while I agree the attack is fast & the low notes have a lot of chunk the rest of the sound is rather tame. Even now playing my friends guitars (which two of three have EMG's) I can't get any emotion out of them, I have to pick up his beat up 1988 IBANEZ EX series to get a decent tone. So I sold my JEM and I sold my EMG 81 and bought a Dimarzio Tone Zone for my RGT42. Looking back this may not have been the best choice for my guitar/musical style. I think it's a great pickup but I think something tighter with a little more attack would be better.

I play mostly metal influenced music through an Ibanez Tube Screamer & Peavey 5150. I'm tuned to C and I don't play a ton of low rhythm mostly a mixture of rhythm/leads (more progressive type stuff). I like vibrato, slides and somewhat technical though not clinical music. I think the Evolution (or EVO2?) would probably be a better match for my playing and mahogany bodied guitar. Am I looking in the right direction?

I'd go for a Fred or a PAF Pro in a low tuned mahogany guitar. Theyre lower output but they cope really well with the lower ferequencies from downtuned playing.

Drop D down a half step is as low as I ever get and I use a mahogany JS for that with a Fred in the bridge... and that works great for me

Evolution is treblier than the Evo2, so, it might handle drop tunings better.

On another hand, try the Drop-Sonic!

Re: Time for a new pickup? Evolution?

Thanks so much for the assistance. I think I'll do a bit of listening to some examples of what was suggested and go from there. I'm happy with the gain on the Tone Zone and the mids are really nice but I don't seem to be getting the harmonics I would like. I've got plenty of low with the Tone Zone as well but more highs would be good because I find boosting the highs at the amp side produces more harshness. I'm sure most of the other pickups listed will give me better separation of notes while the Tone Zone gives me a much thicker wall of sound.
