to replace evo bridge at my vwh

i was looking for something to replace the bridge, i'm more than happy with the neck for cleans but the bridge is not good for rocking tunes when compared to my 77fp. So i thought i'd ask your advice for something quite similar to paf pro but not quite still. Something powerful yet mellow for clean works. i thought about tone zone but still not sure.

breed neck is like a PAF Pro on steroids. It's a great bridge pickup.

well looking at it's characteristics it should be okay, less harsh on treble like paf sometimes is, but isn't breed a bit mushy?

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

Breed neck.... It ain't the Breed bridge.

If anything, the Breed neck is similiar to the PAF Pro, but with more bass and mids. Note, the treble doesnt' change.. its still there. In the bridge, its got a lot of crunch in it, extremely dyanmic (its frightening on a clean tube amp) and has good bite to it. It isn't fat, more on the thin side. I did a clip of it here, I wonder if the link is still up... Note, its more crunchy than chunky (a Tonezone is chunky) and its medium output but with all the high powered pedals and amps around, does't really matter aye?

I would think the Breed BRIDGE would work better for you, based on your description. Its generally mellow sounding, not overwhelmingly powerfull but it has enough juice to rock... great GREAT cleans esp when split.

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

Strange, I would have thought that the evo would be better for rock since it's higher output. I find the paf pros rather lean sounding compared with the evos. The tone zone is great, I use them too, but I doubt it will solve your problem if the evo isn't rock enough for you. Perhaps the 77FP doesn't have the paf pros, maybe they were changed to something else? I've got blue evos for my 77BFB.

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

If you like the PAF Pro alot (if, as Ant said, that's what's in your FP), you might not like the TZ, it's kind of mushy on the bottom. The Norton may be your ticket, that or the Breed. If you have a DMM, plug a cord into your FP, set the switch to the bridge pickup, turn the volume all the way up, and measure across the connector on the other end of the cord, if it is around 8K, it does have PAF Pros. The Pros are good sounding pickups, I'm thinking about using one in the bridge of a HM Strat that I have, they are more open sounding than the Super 3 that was originally in there and the TZ that I have in there now. A little lower output, but I have plenty of gain, so I'm not worried about that.

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

well my FP does have PAF's, it's 15th anniversary not modded and i just love the sound it gives me and i'd like to get same or maybe not same but equivalent sound from my vwh which i'll be gigging with (i'd rather not see my FP die you know ) but air zone/norton or super distorsion, what about them? too many pups to choose from

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

Norton is great, like a TZ with really tight low end and a little less output. Haven't tried a SD, but it probably won't be as bright and transparent as the PP. I'm not a huge fan of Evos, but I really like the Evo 2 which may be your best choice, it's a good match for the Evo neck, a little tamer than a regular Evo, but still has the brightness.

Or, you may just want to throw a set of PPs in your VWH 'cause it sounds like that's what you like(?).

Remember that the VWH has an Alder body, as opposed to the Basswood of your FP - there will be a subtle difference in tone from that alone. If you are handy with a soldering iron, for an experiment, why not whip the Paf Pro out of the bridge position in your FP and try it in the VWH - you'll find out pretty quickly whether it is the tone you are after - without risking any money on what might turn out to be the wrong choice!

Cheers

David

...or you can look at something in the Duncan line. A Pearly Gates or an Alnico Pro, perhaps?

Re: to replace evo bridge at my vwh

I suggest EVO 2. They sound excellent. a bit less output than the evolution but more clarity than the original EVO.

www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk - get your self a set of these, far superior to anything mass produced.

I have a set of Breeds. Wonderful pickups. Close enough to the Paf's to give a little classic sound but still very powerful and modern sounding. I would agree that you should get a Breed in the bridge position.
