Weird/awesome tone control mod - any ideas?

I bought another 7vwh a while back, and was suprised to find the tone control had been modified so that when it's rolled down, it doesn't let any distortion through.

So basically, you can roll it to zero, plsy some nice clean stuff then whack it up to 10 and it's fully face-melting again. It's awesome for playing songs like Tender Surrender too because you start of on zero, then after a minute or whatever roll it up to 3 for a little distortion, 6-7 for that 'almost there' feel and then 10 for the solo.

I LOVE it, and want to know how the hell I can do it on a couple of my other guitars. Does anyone know how it is done?

Cheers

Re: Weird/awesome tone control mod - any ideas?

there are plenty of veteran guitar wiring junkies on this site so somone might have the answer...... failing that you might want to try project guitar with this question cause I havent heard anything like that before... its not a black ice overdrive is it? anychance you could take a pic of the wiring... I could tell you what it is from that more than likely....

I've just put some new strings on so I'll take a snap from under the hood in a couple of weeks time if nobody has come up with anything.

It's funny because when I first rolled down the tone I just thought "WTF!?!?!" but then after rolling it back a few times it was like "Hmmm... interesting " but now I use it all the time

i am guessin that is caused by a high pass cap on the tone pot , or the tone pot is 250K .

i can get a simular effect with my high pass cap on the volume in my guitar.

Why not just open up the guitar and take a picture of it? If you can get some detailed shots of what's under the pickguard I can do up a wiring diagram for you to replicate the mod.

Re: Weird/awesome tone control mod - any ideas?

Like I said before, I just put some new strings on and I was hoping someone already new what this mod was before taking the strings off.

Having said that, I just completely forgot that this is a Lo-Pro trem we're talking about, so I could just pop the strings back in d'oh!!

I'll get some pics up hopefully tomorrow, but if anyone else knows that'd save me a bit of time

Perhaps its a 1-meg pot? It does seem strange.

I got this effect when i was experimenting and used 50 k pots with emgs so try a 750 k or something with the passives.
