What would you do...? Pickup Question Pls.

I just got a new RG1570....but that's another thread coming soon.

Before I even got the guitar I was considering putting a Breed in the bridge and something else in the neck (purely because I haven't heard a good word about the stock RG1570 pups) but, damn, am I being naive to like the stock V7 and V8s??

Should I just go for broke and replace at least one humbucker?

Any comments would be a great help...new to this Dimarzio thing, all I ever played were Strats and Teles.

Thanks.

I think if you change one humbucker you will likely change both. V7 and 8 are not bad humbuckers, but breeds are a step above in my opinion.

That's a pretty cool guitar. I like the mirage blue one.

As for the pickups... Have you checked out the pickup picker on www.dimarzio.com yet? From what I hear, though, the pickup picker isn't a guaranty that you'll like the pickup of which you hear a sound clip, or read a description. I'd find a way to be sure. I wouldn't take any risks. They cost quite a bit.

Re: What would you do...? Pickup Question Pls.

I think the Breed is too chunky, in my 1570 I have EVO2 and Evo neck and they blend better than any pickup config I've tried and I have or have had 20 different Dimarzio`s. I also like the D-sonic bridge and find the Air Norton too chunky. I do however like the Norton bridge. I haven't found a total perfect neck pickup yet but I think it'll be the Humbucker From Hell, but, I have yet to try it in a Basswood body....It was the Cats Ass in my Alder bodied Alvarez Dana Custom ( RG like not that Scoop thing) yrs back.

Pickups are like *******s everyone likes a different one .......
Beings that your a Strat/Tele man you may find the midlow of the Breed abit much as I did.

Asfar as the V7/V8.......they just seem too vanilla nothing wrong with them but nothing spectacular either.

Just food for thought

I guess someone who's tried 20 different dimarzios knows what they're talking about. Thanks for the info, Maul.

Would you be able to describe the sound of the evos you have?

Re: What would you do...? Pickup Question Pls.

Chimp I have a RG 570 (pre-prestige era), and I have tryed in it a few pickups:
Neck: Air-Norton, Fred, SD 57's.
Mid: HS-2, HS-3, Ibanez Super 7F
Bridge: Multibucker, Steve's Special, Fred, Evo2, Super 3.

Now, I'm settled with Evo2 (B), HS-2 (M), Fred (N). I think I will change the last one. But all the other pickups sound very nice in this guitar.

The the other guitar: An old MIJ S470, that now have Seteve's(B), HS-3 (N), Air Norton(N).

But your amp is very important when you choose your pickups. can you tel us about it?

Check out Steve's Special, it's a very unique and interesting sounding pickup that doesn't get much press, if you know what I mean.

yes the Steve's Special sounded very very nice in my RG 570, but the evo2 doesn't sound too good in the S470, so thats why my SS is in the second

Frodo, I recently sold my 65 reissue Fender Deluxe Reverb as I no longer gig. So now I play at home mainly through a small Fender practise amp and a POD 2.0., going into a Protools M-Box.

I sometimes get the chance to crank up the small 15w full tilt when I have access to the large basement at work - and that works fine for me at the moment.

Re: What would you do...? Pickup Question Pls.

Hi! As guy before mentioned, amp is really crucial. Tone you get at the end is really a mix of everything. I think most important thing is not to have a too weak spot in the chain. Even best pickups can't help a lousy amp,and best amp can't do too much for really lousy guitar. But you can get much better sound with "ok" pickups and great amp than with great pickups and "ok" amp And don't "trust" someone cause he played many pickups..it just means it sound good to him and on his amp. Try go on www.harmony-central.com user reviews and see my point...for every pickup there are few guys that think it's just THE best..even V7,V8 stuff(not bad but REALLY not THE best). My point of view is like this..Evo and Breed are great pickups if you have very good amp and you want to play dirty stuff. On amp that is just "ok" their big output makes too much not pleasent noise(though same thing on Steve Vai hands and equipement sound like powerfull scream..on your amp and fingers may sound like dirt). I went for medium output Air Zone and Breed..on my amp AZ sound so much better and more defined..and when I need power I just use more overdrive or a pedal. And if you can crank your amp..that gets power that sounds to me much better than to try fake it with a big output pu..just listen to GNR Slash sound..low output pu + cranked full stack Marshall..natural..powerfull..nice!

If you want to be in the rigth spot at the pickup to buy, wait until you get your new guitar, plug it in your setup and play with it a couple of days, then ask yourself who do you want to improve your tone: if you want more clarity get a SS, more bottom end warms get a breed, more hi end evo2, want to scream evolution, more mids Mo' joe, etc, etc, etc.
