don't rule out the duncan JB yet. that is a great pickup. easilty coaxing old EVH tone from it. the best old EVH tone i got was from a USA soldano sp-77 series 2 preamp into the "clean" of my 5150 using a 1986
kramer baretta
that was stock. back them they had schaller hums and the next year went to JBs. so don't rule out the duncan "standard".

Yeah the JB is a workhorse pu
I think that IF you stay in the 8.5K paf range you should get the early VH tone.
My
paf pro
gets it with a old marshall plexi, and the other guy gets his with a JB and soldano.
Unfortunatley there are about 100 different paf pu's out there so you could play it safe and get the duncan
custom shop
"EVH" model? that is what ed used on the records up to F.U.C.K and balance.

What i am really after is the old EVH first record tone or at least that type of tone? I tried a Tone zone and it is NOT at ALL old EVH
The tone zone sounds more "new EVH" to me like on F.U.C.K and balance

He already tried the
tone zone
and didnt like it..........and neither did i. at least for evh tone. I agree with the paf pro cause it makes you fight it a little

personally i hate to fight pickups for tone. if i felt like fighting a pickup to get decent tone, i'd get some powersounds,
duncan designed
, or emg selects to torture myself with. if your going to pay money for something, it should make your life easier, not make you resent it. the fred is easier and more open to get picking dynamics out of than the paf pro. so it make's it a "better" pickup. the only weird thing about a fred in the bridge is the harmonics. it has the strangest harmonics i have ever heard or felt with a pickup. so i would also venture to recommend the fred to you.

nothing about the fred makes it a BETTTER pickup thats a subjective idea. The paf pro has the single best clean sound IVe EVEr used making it a better pickup for me and for his uses as well

snipe...note how better is in quotations? i personally don't think it's better than the paf pro, dimarzio just says its the next step up for a hotter pickup. therefore...."better". like how the norton is "better" than the fred and the tone zone is "better" than the norton. tone is subjective....DUH!!! jsut trying to give insight, not bully people into my opinions. with that said...lo-pro edges are "better".

dimarzio themselves recomend starting with a pro and IF it is not ideal for you it is a great gauge on what to go to next?
The TZ you already tried,so under that is the norton, fred, pro.
I would have to say that for what you described the pro or fred is best because the norton has a big midrange.
