Which Dimarzio pickup?

Hey guys, I'm swapping out the dimarzio/ibz pickup in my RG321F Prestige, and I wanted to see what you all recommended. I play a lot of paul gilbert and joe satriani stuff and the Guitar that I have is made of Mahogany. Not afraid of Medium output Dimarzio's because my XXX will be able to boost it. I dont think I want a tonezone because it will make the already dark sounding guitar(mahogany) sound way too dark. So I was thinking maybe a super distortion or a Paf Pro. I dont like Evo's that much. Ive had em before. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

A PAF Pro has a pretty bright and transparent sound. That might be what you're looking for to 'liven up' your dark mahogany guitar.
The Super Distortion mostly has a lot of mids, not highs. Gives it a very raw sound. Not exactly something that would suit Satriani, I think.

I like the FRED in my JS-6 which is a similar setup to the RG321F, it's not too high output and its not at all bassy or boomy so sits nicely with mahogany.

The Mo Joe, is supposed to be a bit "mo" than a FRED but I've not tried one in a mahogany guitar

Thanks for the help so far guys. Does the PAF Pro sound good with the volume backed down on the guitar?

Re: Which Dimarzio pickup?

Hard to say. I used it in a guitar with a treble bleed capacitor on the volume pot, like Satriani's.
That makes the tone brighten as you back off the volume. The result was a very clean sound, almost single-coilish.
I quite liked it.
I don't know how it will sound without treble bleed though.

Re: Which Dimarzio pickup?

try out the norton, it's got a paf pro/fred vibe with more muscle to it and isn't overly dark in mohagany. it wasn't in my RG anyway. it's great with an air norton or paf pro in the neck also.

keep in mind, every pickup needs the right guitar to house it though. my experience may not be yours.

+1..you can pretty much do anything with that pickup as long as you have a versatile amp that would give you nice cleans and high gain distortion. That's the secret to the PAF PRO's. No mud with these babies.

Re: Which Dimarzio pickup?

paf pro's would be great for what your looking for, but since your running a mahogany axe, try the fred in the neck and a norton in the bridge. or a paf joe and mo joe pair. those would result in a bigger sound.
