Which EMGs for use in basswood?
I have an RG570 and am considering a set of EMGs. Because it is basswood, I've heard people saying the 81 is too thin for the neck. In its place, some people recommend an 85, and a 60 for the neck. I think I'd put an SA in the middle, also.
Does anyone agree that the 85/60 set is best for basswood? Any differing opinions?

85 in the bridge! -- i've tried this before and it's a good match -- it'll fatten and warm up the bridge tone. but still with nice bite and cut...
81 in the bridge of an RG sounds thin IMHO. -- I've already tried that too.
so yeah, you're right on -- 85/60 combo with SA in the middle should get you great tones

I've played an 85 and an 81 both in the
bridge position
on my basswood RG and loved both of them. I'm currently playing with the 81 and I think I'll keep it that way. 85 in the neck sounds great too.

What kind of amps are you guys using with the 81 in the bridge? I've got a 5150 that it'd be going through, which can sometimes be icepicky.

81 or 85 in the bridge will be fine. I would check out a 60, or even better, a 60A in the neck.
SA for single coil is a good choice, too.
81/SA/60A. Can't go wrong.

I would not recommend any EMG's in basswood. But that is just my opinion

P.S. Do an 18 volt mod. Makes a big difference.
