Re: Who's Played a Steve Special & Evo

the evo is much more in your face type of sound . it cuts very well , and can be a tad shrill . it has a natural sort of compression , and harmonics come fairly well .

the steve's special , is much more laid back , it is defined but in no way is shrill it is very very smooth . It doesn't push your amp into overdrive like to evo can .

it was awhile ago when i had the evo , i bought another one a day ago and it will be here in a few days . I had a steve's speical about 3 months ago , it didn't keep the guitar it was in much longer then that .

Re: Who's Played a Steve Special & Evo

SS gives the impression of being lower output, because it is a very clear pup when used with heavy distortion, even though it is still a high output pup. To my ears, it sounds like a mixture of an evo and a single coil, and I like it.
I prefer the evo for clean sounds though.

Just my opinion, I'm sure many will disagree.

Re: Who's Played a Steve Special & Evo

I have an Evo in my Jem and was thinking of getting another guitar set up with a SS/Air Norton combo but I still want an aggressive bridge pickup to cover some metal as well as instrumental stuff. I was thinking the SS since my Mesa amp is kind of mid heavy or a D-Sonic?

That is just why I went with that set up in a basswood RG - to complement my Jem without being so different that I'd need to alter all the setting on my amp. Sounds great.

I have tried so many pups (vintage and boutique included) in so many guitars that long time ago I decided to stay with alder + evo not trying anomre. it is the tone I want.

Re: Who's Played a Steve Special & Evo

The SS has a very clear sound, with a nice crisp attack. It doesn't overdrive the amp like other high output pickups like the tone zone. It works just fine for going chugga chugga though. I guess its not as ballsy as a really high output pickup, but then again the moment I try to play something besides powerchords I get fed up with other pickups.

In my RG760 when I turn the volume down the bass sort of drops out on the SS and it gets a very trebly, twangy sound. Makes me think of Warren Zevon's Lawyers Guns and Money.

It sounds really boring clean. I switch to the middle or neck.

Edit: I like the comparison with a single coil. The only pickups I can stand in the bridge now are the SS or a single coil, but I don't like what happens with the SC pickups I have when the gain goes up or you pick hard.
