Re: Wiring the HS3

Are you trying to use this diagram:
http://www.dimarzio.com//media/diagrams/B2.pdf

If so, that is still just one selector but it has 2 sides to it to allow more complex wiring options. What kind of switch do you have?

Re: Wiring the HS3

... solder black + white and leave alone. red goes to middle hot on 5-way, green + bare to ground.

It is kind of like 2 switches, one besides the other.

That diagram isn't going to work for your switch at all. As judasbane says, solder black and white together then tape them off, and treat the HS3 as if it were a true single coil.

Find the appropriate diagram for your guitar here:
http://www.ibanez.com/support/wiringdiagrams.aspx

Then look up the conversion between the colour codes for the stock pickups and the ones you are installing and you're good to get the job done.

(or go buy a new switch)

Re: Wiring the HS3

Ahh well thanks alot for the help guys, i guess i'll have to buy a new selector switch, know where i can get one from? the fleabay possibly?
I guess i'll have to just wire it in as a single coil for now >_< wont get the same output and performance like i would if it was wired properly would i?

EDIT: ****! the pick up selector costs £25 any place i can get it cheaper? and should i keep my 500k pots or get 250k ones?

Re: Wiring the HS3

you dont need the multipole switch, so as someone has said and wire the red to hot, green and braid to ground and the black and white together taped off.
that will run it flat out in series humbucking mode, the only reason you would need a new switch is because you would want to coild split the HS-3 - and why would you want to do that ?

im assuming you have a H-S-H guitar, just split the bridge and neck buckers as usual and run the HS-3 humbucking all the time...
still, if you want I can sell you a megaswitch, Ive got some in stock at £17.50 + shipping.
your 500K pots are fine.

Re: Wiring the HS3

You only need to change the switch if you want to split the HS3. There are many switches that would work:
http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/5_W...E_WAFER_WDE5XL
for example (though I think you need to buy a switch tip separately with the Oaks)

Keep the 500 pots, at least until you've tried out the new pups.

Re: Wiring the HS3

Glad to help. Positions 2 and 4 will work, but won't sound quite like 2 single coils as you have the HS3 still dual coil and humbucking, and a split coil from your humbucker.

Re: Wiring the HS3

no probs, cheers Algiman

like the man says, forget that the HS-3 is a humbucker, wire it like its a single coil and forget it.. those pickups sound pretty weak when you split them anyway so I doubt youll find a real use for splitting it therefore no value in changing the switch..

You got it backwards. A stacked single coil is hotter when split and has lower output when is not (Read Dimarzio's 4Conductor.pdf).

Also your 2 & 4 will not be hum cancelling.

I use HS-2 and HS-3 in my guitars and I wire the like regular reverse wounded single coils: black is hot, red is ground, green and white not used

Re: Wiring the HS3

From Dimarzio's 4Conductor.pdf you could just use the pickup as a standard single coil using the red and black wires only. Then you'll be humbucking in all position except 3 middle SC on it's own
