Zakk Wylde set (81/85) with a 5 way

So I'm wiring these up for a friend, and he doesn't want to splurg on the $10 3-way. I need to know if this diagram is accurate, I don't want to wire it up only to find out it's not going to work. I've read this should be bridge pos.1, both bridge and neck in positions 2-4, and neck in the 5th. I've never experimented with switches before so I'm clueless as to whether this is even pheasable.

Thanks for any help

Something about that doesn't look right to me, but I guess it depends on the 5-way switch you have, some of them are wired differently than others. What I've done in the past is have the bridge pickup wired to the usual bridge lug, the neck on the middle lug and the neck lug open. This yielded

1 - Bridge
2 - Bridge + Neck
3 - Neck
4 - Neck
5 - Nothing (essentially a poor man's kill switch)

I don't see any reason why you couldn't wire the neck across both the middle and neck lugs and get Bridge, Both, Neck, Neck, Neck though if you wanted to avoid accidentally cutting out the sound entirely.

Yep, really depends on how that switch works.

I see, I was thinking they were universal, like they really should be. It's an LTD H-1000 if it helps. Thanks anyway if not, maybe I'll get some photos of it if I can't get it figured out.

Now that's peculiar, the LTD H-1000 is listed as coming with an EMG 81/85 set stock except on the cherry sunburst model which has Duncans. And either way, a 3-way switch is supposed to be stock.

There is a relatively standard type of 5-way switch out there, such as what Ibanez uses on most of their three pickup guitars. They do use a different type on their H-H guitars though since there's not much of interest you can do with a standard 5-way and two humbuckers.

As such, since this is an H-H guitar, I would expect that the existing 5-way switch may be a non-standard type in which case even following an otherwise correct wiring diagram will lead to unpredictable results. The only real way to deal with it is to either experiment with it or get a new switch.

It's the cherry sunburst one, and trust me I haven't opened it up yet, but I played it and it definately was a 5-way. I don't know how to explain that, but I know it was bought second hand so that could be it.

It looks exactly like this one.

Now I'm super confused, I can't find it anywhere in the ESP/LTD archive section.

Re: Zakk Wylde set (81/85) with a 5 way

Ok I'm not lucky enough to have a spare 3-way laying around, but I did find a Cor-tek 5-way that I think used to go to a RG 7321. So lets assume I can't figure out the LTD switch and I use this one instead. Any ideas on how to wire this switch into a 3-way?

Yes I was aware of that, that's why I'm trying to figure out how to jump a few connections on a 5-way so it'll work with this set. Thanks for the attempt though

Re: Zakk Wylde set (81/85) with a 5 way

well is it a 5 way or a superswitch? i doubt a 2H setup would come with a standard 5 way.
