Well then that puts rap out of the mix!!

Most of the rap out there is degrading in some way or another, which leads to a violent theme/nature. My daughter listens to some of it...I think mostly to piss us off!! A lot of it is repetitious 3-4 measure loops over and over for 5 minutes...

Reading Left Lanes thing I wiki'd it and here's what I got...

The U.S. population's racial distribution in 2006 was as follows:

* White alone: 73.9% or 221.3 million
* Black or African American alone: 12.2% or 37.1 million
* Asian alone: 4.4% or 13.1 million
* American Indian or Alaska Native alone: 0.8% or 2.4 million
* Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander alone: 0.14% or 0.43 million
* Some other race alone: 6.3% or 19.0 million
* Two or more races: 2.0% or 6.1 million

Amazing that rap sells at all!!

hehehe....you'd be surprised, there's some good stuff out there. A little, granted, but pretty good stuff. Some of these guys are actually talented writers, even if there beats are repititious...but isn't most rock? How boring is the Scorpions drummer do you think? hehehe...

Yeah but the difference with rock (and there is some cheese ball rock out there) is the intro is 3-5 measures which leads into the verse which is a different 3-5 measures, and then into a 3-5 measure chorus, and a 3-5 measure bridge...it constantly changes. Rap has one change or no change at all...

I like Young MC, and Fresh Prince/Wil Smith so I know there are exceptions...And Herman Rarebell is just as tight as the drum loops the rappers use!

Re: Do you see racism?

And anyone can come up with a rap "song" with just a few key words:

b*tch
h*e
muthafu*ka

I consider myself objective about music, but to consider that garbage even remotely close to actual talent is absurd. The only "talent" you need is to know how to open up a Pro Tools session and max out every plug-in (reverb, delays, etc.) available, in addition to knowing how to copy a 4 beat loop over and over.

And what makes it even more sickening is to see all the little wealthy, preppy suburb kids listening to it, thinking they're "hood-hardened"

Re: Do you see racism?

I guess you'd also call Native American or any other Native music for that matter absurd since their rythms are repetitive? *Writing* talent is what I said... I never said they were musical... :P I don't know what you consider rap, but to me it's a style in delivery of lyrics. Lyrically, some (not all) are good, original writers. I'm sure my cat can write better beats just walking on my keyboard.

Waylay00, I'm not trying to create a battle or debate on who has talent and who doesn't, but you're loosing the sense of this thread by arguing that rap isn't music, my opinion only suggested that people are, for the most, prejudiced based on what little they see and/or hear, not on what they know. You've proved this, so thanks !

You got it dead on Cosmic...

As for the the whole race thing... A couple of my best friends are black and I think of them as brothers. They would stick up for me if I was in a jam and always have my back if need be.

One of them talked to a local dj at a club and asked him why he doesnt like rap, and the DJ straight said to his face "I dont like black people." Now you got some balls to say that to someones face. My friend was kinda shocked and yet respected the fact that he didnt bull**** him and put a front on. So he said ok thats cool and walked away. The guy insisted on trying to explain why he didnt and my friend wanted nothing to do with it and almost got into a fight because the guy didnt listen and he even warned the guy and said "dont get in my face, you dont like me so dont talk to me." One thing lead to another bouncers came and kicked my friend out even though he wasnt antagonizing anything.

I tried explaining to him that the DJ might have had a bad experience and is so narrow minded to think that all black people are like that. I also said or his parents taught him as a child, but to try and explain to a black man why you dont like him doesn't seem like it was taught, i think it was an experience he had and is holding a grudge.

That right there shows racism still exists in its ugliest form. I think people need to stop being so narrow minded and get their heads out of their asses...

my .02 cents...

Re: Do you see racism?

Okay, this touches a nerve since I'm a non-White American, so please forgive my loquacity in offering my perspective.

With all due respect, if you're White American or European or Australian you're going to see a very limited amount of racism. It's like a Queen in her palace thinking life is good while the peasants on the outside are starving.

It is very rare that you'll be called a "Cracker" or "Honky". Yet, when a Muslim woman in her head scarf or a Muslim male with a long beard gets into a car accident the very first object of focus will be their race and religion.

I will agree that racism against Blacks in particular has ebbed quite a bit in the USA. We do have a Half-black candidate for president. That is a huge leap and it does give me some pride in the ethos of America and I hope that within the next decade that can extend to other ethnic minorities in the USA.

The reason for the reduced (note I said reduced, not cessation of) racism and prejudice against Blacks is because the USA and Europe have a new focus: Muslims and immigrants from Latin American and Mexico.

In spite of the fact that my family is an upper class high income family, every single male member of my family and I have been involved in physical fights in the past 7 years due to our race and/or religion. Most of the time its been rushing to the aid of the women in our family whom some see as easy targets.

I was born in New Jersey and my father came to the USA from the USSR during the Cold War to assist the US government in steel manufacturing intelligence he brought from the Soviets. He became a professor at Princeton University. We didn't come for material gain in pursuit of the "American Dream". My father brought us here because he believed in this country's principles over the Soviet Union's (or the Soviets' lack thereof).

In spite of that, a White American whose ancestors probably came here on a boat due to criminal deportation or opportunism will look down on me as a pariah and a non-American. You have no idea how frustrating that is.

I grew up a total Headbanger in an all White neighborhood. I never even knew there was a difference between me and my White friends. We were united on Metal. As cheesy as that sounds it's true. We went our whole lives good friends. Yet, after 9/11 most of them dropped me very subtly and gradually. My very best friend who was my drummer from the 6th grade up to Senior Year of High School no longer speaks to me at the behest of his very Southern Baptist wife. It hurts.

I'm hoping for change come the end of this year. Naive? Maybe. Hopeful? Very.

Re: Do you see racism?

I have a feeling that the above post will pretty much set off the firestorm that shuts this thread down.

This line
"With all due respect, if you're White American or European or Australian you're going to see a very limited amount of racism. It's like a Queen in her palace thinking life is good while the peasants on the outside are starving"

and this one:
"In spite of that, a White American whose ancestors probably came here on a boat due to criminal deportation or opportunism will look down on me as a pariah and a non-American. You have no idea how frustrating that is."

Well I don't discriminate. I hate everyone regardless of color, religion, sexual freakyness, or neck inlay on their guitars.

I still say it is mostly in your head. If you carry yourself well and speak intelligently people will respect you. Unless you are fat then all bets are off.
