All the albums my friend, its the only real way to go.
mmm yep, i have all the albums. i understand the deal with progressiveness but sometimes i'm like "guys, come on, seriously, this part really doesn't need to be there...".

Re: Dream theater?

well, i second that: listen the albums from the first one to the last one:

When dream and day unite
images and words
awake
a change of seasons
falling into infinity
etc etc etc

i'm really really tired of reading DT comments and opinions at Orkut and all around the internet forums.
I started listen DT at 1993 and never stoped.
Not all albums are great.
Anyway i listen to all of them with the same enthusiasm and i really really love every single song, every single note.
am i crazy or what?

Not at all you just have good taste for music.
Usually who doesn't like DT keeps playing pentatonics for about......his whole life LOL
DT goes from beautiful ballads to rock to metal to completely crazy shredding prgressive 20 minutes songs and to instrumental music. Somebody who says DT is just shredding nonsense musicians tells me he knows nothing about them.
They're one of a few bands that plays almost all styles,we never know what will come.

Could be Wil I have all the disks, get them as soon as they come out, but some of it is better than others. Some tunes take me a while to get into, some I never get in to. When it works though, it really works!

Re: Dream theater?

There's no way you can make a DT "must listen" to list and not include Scenes From A Memory! By far their best album in my eyes. Images and Words is great as well. I'd rank them as follows:

1. SFAM
2. I&W
3. Awake
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
5. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
6. Train of Thought
7. Octavarium
8. Falling Into Infinity
9. Systematic Chaos

Re: Dream theater?

If you're after a good cross section of dream theater you might just be better off buying their greatest hits album. I'm sure there was a thread just like this where everyone put there albums in order of merit and i said pretty much the same...... sorry its my man time of the month!

Re: Dream theater?

Im finding that I dont like the dream theater songs that have lots of keyboard parts or xylophone parts. I dont mind the piano. I like songs like forsaken I dont like songs like octavarium.

i never stoped by to listen just one single tune alone.
maybe i'm stupid but i listen to them by complete albums at once.
never a single song.

when i do listen any music in general, i love to get it all: just full album.
maybe because the songs are like chapters and listen to the entire album is something like reading the entire book.
(sorry my english)

Re: Dream theater?

Yeah, not me I might be the only one. I listen to an album a few times, really get to know the tunes, and then usually pick favorites I listen to more than the others after that. For example, on 6DOIT, I'll listen to 'Glass Prison', 'Blind Faith/Misunderstood' (sheer brilliance those two, but I digress) and then skip 'the Great Debate' because its a let down to me after Misunderstood.
