Re: Dream theater?

Scenes from a Memory...Such a great album. Its weird, I'll put it away for several months, but then I'll come back and it'll be the only thing in my car's CD player for weeks on end lol.

My 2nd favorite is Systematic Chaos, mainly for the first and last track "In the Presence of Enemies". SO Freaking epic lol.

Their latest one, "Black Clouds and Silver linings" has grown on me though...

I have a huge thing for The Count of Tuscany. The beginning solo is amazing.

Black clouds imho is way better than SC, Octa, and ToT... what do you think?
My favourite is Images and Words and I suggest you to listen that... it's EPIC!

Musically my favourite is SFAM. Awake and 8v are tied at a close 2nd.
Production-wise, the BEST DT album is FII. Listen to "The Making of..." and you'll see what I am talking about!

Re: Dream theater?

Agreed!! I&W was my first DT album and I have been hooked since.. Every album is a piece of work but ToT and Oct didn't really go down with me. Although, the title track to Octvarium is awesome and prolly my fav off the album.

But, A Change of Seasons (The song) is just perfect. It is a testament to what Prog Rock is all about. La Brie sounds perfect in that kind of atmosphere. I wish they'd come out with more songs like that but they are a band , and as MP & JP stated, they are constantly evolving. which is great for us because with each new album, we are pretty much guaranteed of something new. Off BC & SL, Count Of Tuscany is just an amazing song and it sounds AWESOME live too . Eventhough, the tracks in BC & SL doesn't seem to be aligned as they are on their other albums (if that makes sense).

Be that it may,I love BC & SL too.

Welcome to the DT fold !!

Re: Dream theater?

The best approach to listening to DT is this (IMHO):

1. Scenes From a Memory
2. Awake
3. Once in a LIVEtime
4. Images and Words
5. A Change of Seasons
6. Live at the Marquee
7. Octavarium
8. Falling Into Infinity
9. Systematic Chaos
10. Live Scenes From New York
11. When Dream and Day Unite
12. Live at Budokan
13. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
14. Train of Thought

##. Official Bootlegs and Fan Club editions

I garantee you that you'll be a DT fan after this sequence.

Re: Dream theater?

I just got their new album, and holy s***.

I'm only 14 minutes into the first song (LOL, that's nearly half the time of some whole records), but it's so mindblowingly awesome. The first solo blows me away, and the keyboard stuff fits really well.

I have never 'really' tried to give DT a 'full and fair' listen through, but I am definitely going to now. I mean, I liked them before, but WOW.

Re: Dream theater?

I don't like them. The lyrics don't make any sense to me and the vocals are horrible. I'm also not into 10/20/30 minute interludes mid-song that usually end up having circus sounding keyboards and general ****ing of all band members of their instruments that usually never add anything to the song and are just jam sessions.

I kind of like Metropolis part 1 when its covered by a different vocalist on youtube. Forsaken is okay, and dark eternal night's first 3 minutes are okay but the rest of it is bad (one of those songs with the 10/20/30 minute jam session with circus sounding keyboards).

If the lyrics don't make sense, go back to high school and study English again. Dream Theater's lyrics are the only ones that I enjoy analyzing, and they're much deeper than that of other bands.

Re: Dream theater?

I agree with many here on Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.
It was my first Dream Theater album, and it's still my favorite.
