Re: Dream theater?

I agree with many here on Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory.
It was my first Dream Theater album, and it's still my favorite.

I thought the same.
DT lyrics are very complex and have a lot of poetry so to understand them you need to have a huge knowledgement about that stuff. Some people like poetry which makes our imagination flies, some prefer simple lyrics cause their culture is so small (I'm not refering to any member).
I remember around 1995 I sold my small peavey rage to a guy who came to my house to take it.While testing it I asked if he liked Steve Vai.He said=
Not so much cause WE can't understand what he does.
I said = just because YOU don't understand it doesn't means the whole world doesn't too.
That guy played some wrong metallica riffs so I understood why he didn't understood Vai's music, maybe with a little more time STUDYING lol

I love some hair metal bands which have very simple lyrics still I can enjoy DT lyrics so I think I have a good knowledgement and don't forget english isn't my first language!
There are a lot of websites explaining DT lyrics but people are too lazy to google, well I'm not,I love learning expecially about a different language.

Re: Dream theater?

I never said anything about understanding them, I do understand them and have the ability to decipher them, but they still don't make sense to me, i.e. they are nonsensical.

I kind of like Metropolis part 1 when its covered by a different vocalist on youtube. Forsaken is okay, and dark eternal night's first 3 minutes are okay but the rest of it is bad (one of those songs with the 10/20/30 minute jam session with circus sounding keyboards).
If the lyrics don't make sense, go back to high school and study English again. Dream Theater's lyrics are the only ones that I enjoy analyzing, and they're much deeper than that of other bands.

Re: Dream theater?

You misunderstood. I said they didn't make any sense to me. Of course they make sense in a literal term, but to me, they don't make any sense, i.e. they are nonsensical.

Just to let you all you fanboys of Dream Theater know right now, before you get all defensive and misunderstanding me (twice so far in this thread) I did not bash Dream Theater in any way and only related my own opinions and what made sense TO ME or not TO ME and didn't mean it in a literal term. So cool it. They are very good musicians and I highly respect them, but the songs they put together do not interest me in the least bit.

I'm not a fan boy of any band in fact I couldn 't care less about bands,I care about music.
And you (we) have the right of liking or not of anything.
DT is just an example of a band that makes awesome lyrics.I'd have said what I said about any other band that makes great lyrics. But this thread is about DT that makes great lyrics lol
The same way if it was a thread about Jonas Bros and someone have said they make great lyrics I'd say nope, they make crap lyrics.
It doesn't matter which band we're talking about.
I wish there were more bands like DT which presents me with so good english and poetry.
Even if I hated their music still I'd study their lyrics.
blah blah blah lol

If they dont make sense to you, then you dont understand them. Dont confuse english with chinglish, If you truely understood the lyrics, the songs, and what each track was trying to portray to the listener, then they wouldn't be "nonsenical"

DT, is proactive metal music. Its introspective, its music about love, loss, hatred, and laughter "circus bits".

Each song takes you on a journey, and people who enjoy music that goes for more then 3.5 mins, usually want alot more out of their music then just "she loves you yeah yeah yeah" Nothing wrong with the beatles, but some of us enjoy and are searching for the next thing, as far as pushing the boundaries of music.

Frank Zappa would know what i'm talking about...

Good post. Huge DT fan here. Seen them on tour this and they totally rocked the place.

I agree with the start at the beginning. It's really neat to see how the music has pregressed through the years. and like Mike said, how their sound changed when Derek came aboard. Love the new album.

SFAM for me.

Yep,the producer triggered snare and kick drum.
Terrible.
Still it shows you don't need perfection to make a perfect album.
Good music is good even with crap tones or something.
