Dream theater?

Im sure there are alot of dream theater fans here. I just know a few of there songs. I would like to get more into them. Can I have some direction please? I dont have much time to sift through 9 studio albums.

Re: Dream theater?

Personally, I'd start with Images & Words and progress forward from there. This will allow you to feel how the long-time fans like myself have watched them grow and evolve.

If you just want the highlights of their career, in my opinion, I'd say...

1.) Images & Words
2.) Awake
3.) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
4.) Score XX Live

Above all, try to listen without expectation and just enjoy. I think too many fans expect far too much from DT these days. Even I have a tendency to do that... so just listen and enjoy.

1.) Images & Words
2.) Awake
3.) Scenes from a memory
4.) Octavarium
5.) Live at budokan dvd
6.) Score dvd

All DT albums have their own sonority and identity. They all sound different(thank god).Their albums are always a surprise cause we never know how they'll sound.
Master pieces.

Re: Dream theater?

Skip Octavarium and put Falling into infinity in its place. You really have to hear the influence and direction Derek Sherinian added!

1. Images & Words
2. Awake
3. Falling into Infinity
4. A Change of Seasons
5 Scenes from a Memory

3 and 4 are Derek Sherinian on KB's pre Jordan, he had an altogether different vibe that a LOT of people enjoyed. Jordan is amazing, but Derek was just cool, his tone was better, too! After 5. I would go maybe 6 degrees of inner turbulence, disc one, the 2nd disc is blah, there is an "opus" that sounds like someone hit Demo Play on a Yamaha KB, or something. not their best work, actually, the best "new" CD would have to be Systematic Chaos. The newer stuff really isn't as good as they self produce a lot, and it shows. They need an external influence helping them out, IMO.

you will see. As you move through the chronology, you will hear the writing from Images gradually disappear. They sparked up again on Scenes, as Jordan was somewhat new to the band and most of the material was already written.

it's funny, i listen to DT mainly for their heavy parts. i'll be listening to a song, start headbanging violently to an epicly heavy riff or breakdown then there will be like 7 minutes of horribly cheesy keyboard solos and retarded time signatures so i just start to yawn...

Hee. Prog would be so much better if the keyboardists were restricted to atmospherics and chords.

Do yourself a favour and buy and or listen to DT's entire discography. Start from the first album and move on to the second. Its how most of their fans progressed with there music, why not do the same. Its how they made it big, so all their works are worth a listen.

All the albums my friend, its the only real way to go.
