Hip Hop? No, I say!!!

Is this really music? I understand it's art and a form of expression but...

My wife really pisses me off sometimes, because she'll make a comment about how I'm not a complete musician because I'm not into or versatile in all types of music! Tonight was the Hip Hop comment...Our daughter listens to a bit of this and my wife likes a few songs, and I REALLY hate that sh!t

I'm a Jazz-Rock-Fusion-Funk-Folk type of guy heavily into the composing aspect of things. Do I need to broaden my schtick? Or is it just a case of me being me?

Why doesn't Al Dimeola do a rap record, or Puff Daddy play punk? Why don't the Stones issue a ska record, or Sum 41 perform chamber music? Am I just being me?

She says these things (once a year or so and just in passing) in jest. and not to be hurtful. This one hit me for some reason...

Am I just being me, or am I a relic? Like the American Indian who progress passed by!!

I have nothing against hip hop, I do find some of their tune catchy, I use them as my ear training for example oh the singer sings in triplet, and figuring out the rhythm and all.

Re: Hip Hop? No, I say!!!

Some good elements of it have already spread to other forms of music, I don't enjoy it in it's purest form. This happens with all pure/ concentrated forms of music...I personally dislike traditional Jazz but I occassionally hear elements of it in other genres and it makes it easier for for me appreciate. I'm not saying "watered down" versions of music are good, but taking certain elements from one genre to another is a good thing. My opinion, of course.

I have never heard a Hip Hop song (and I use the term loosely) that I found enjoyable.

Rock on!

QFT! We are a metal band, and none of us are really into hip hop much at all, but we inserted an original beat that we mixed into the middle of just one of our songs on our latest album and we have gotten so many compliments on it surprisingly. (and before anyone says anything, no bands like linkin park or limp bizkit do not count as metal bands inserting hip hop because A) they are ear poison and B) they are nothing close to "metal" in my book :P )

Little things like that catch people off guard.

Hip hop hurts my ears.
Makes me desperately take my Rachmaninoff concerto albums.

Re: Hip Hop? No, I say!!!

One of my favorite bands, 311, is a hybrid band! Same with The Police. I also count Tim Mahoney and Andy Summers as HUGE influences in my playing. Metal and hip hop are great in their pure forms, but there's nothing wrong with mixing stuff up and trying to do something different. I think a lot of it has to do with the beat. I love hip hop, R&b and (especially) some old 70's soul/funk.
*Girls* love to dance and love dancing to these beats as well. That's something to remember, guys!

Hiphop is the bane of my ears. I'm hesitant to call it music, but the basics are there....lyrics, beat, some sort of music.....but still.

Re: Hip Hop? No, I say!!!

I don't much care for hip hop on a personal level, but I recognize why it's appealing to some people on general principle. I feel the same way about other kinds of music (and other forms of art, for that matter). To each his or her own, no?

That said, it's not the music itself that I have an intrinsic problem with; rather, it's the culture. An art form that actively promotes lifestyle choices that are, at best, ludicrous and at worst, illegal and sometimes fatal is dubious to say the least.

I mean, just look at what hair-band culture did to us in the 1980's. A whole generation of otherwise fairly well-adjusted young men thinking it was "ok" to walk around wearing brightly-colored mesh tank tops.

Not cool.

Won't someone please think of the children?
