How does one enjoy this?

OK, let me preface first by saying that I'm very open-minded when it comes to music. And I don't mean to be the one starting a potential flame-war thread. With that said, I find it really difficult to believe that anyone can call this music, much less buy an entire album of it...It's called "drone metal", for what it's worth:

What am I missing? It seems to be just another product of forced eclecticism. There has to be a line drawn somewhere as to when something can be deemed art.

Yeah I mean...there's something interesting to find with every band's music. Some people are huge fans of bands like Dying Fetus and Exhumed and all these other bands with lyrics about eating rotten vaginas and riffs that are completely incoherent...but those bands tend to have excellent drummers. So, go figure.

Re: How does one enjoy this?

I don't think there was anything interesting about the band waylay posted, In fact I'd be insulted if I were in a band like Dying Fetus being compared to whatever that "drone metal" band was called.

At least the people in bands like Dying Fetus have written ideas (as opposed to whatever that just was, was there any real guitar playing?, I honestly didn't last long enough to hear anything "coherent"), no matter how incoherent they (Dying Fetus I mean) sound to you or me, they aren't. It's just what the people in those bands like to play or write, whatever. They seem to hear something attractive to them in it.

Really, even though I'm not a fan of Dying Fetus (though they do have a couple songs I find catchy, I won't lie) I can still accept it as music. But whatever this is, I wouldn't label it as music, just noise. Seriously "drone metal" could be the dumbest genre ever conceived.

this music kinda seems like it would fit in a bleak, alien, philosophical movie about life.

I think this kinda speaks to that type of thing.
Happened a few years ago with Grunge, although Grunge had direction and melody...

Drone Metal is a crime against nature but it fails in comparison of crapulence to Noise Jazz.

Not to play the Devil's Advocate here, but when it comes to underground music, there will always be those bands on the extreme fringes that are making strange experimental music. They've had it in Punk, Electronica, and Grunge, so why not Metal. This isn't something I would go out of my way to listen to, but some of you have made the music valid without even thinking about it.

So the music instilled an idea in your head.

So the music seems to have a purpose, in that it evokes certain scenes or ideas in peoples' minds, whether you actually like the music or not. Just for the record, I don't like drone metal, but I do see it's purpose. It would be sweet in some sort of soundtrack, just not something to really listen to on it's own.

Bear in mind that drone metal is an off-shoot of Sludge and Doom Metal, which features songs about alienation, depression, and drugs. It kind of makes sense almost that Drone Metal would arise out of that. If I was high as hell and depressed, I'd make some pretty weird music as well.
Just a little food for thought.

Re: How does one enjoy this?

More than weird I find it funny that some people classify that as music. What bothers me is that the youtube user id reads masterofpuppets, avatar is Slayer's Reign in Blood and then he comments "Just an awesome drone/doom metal band" - how could someone who has heard two of the greatest metal albums to date even pretend to enjoy this junk?
