Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

I think Satch and Vai of course are amazing, dont' get me wrong, lol. I can definately see liking Jimmy Page, he wrote some of the best guitar parts ever. Man, I love the Stairway to Heaven solo, among many others. I've never heard of John Sykes, I'll check him out, thanks for the recomendation.

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

Dude, Jason Becker is insane! I only recently heard of Tony M. I heard about him playing with Steve Vai, so I"m gonna have to check him out. I'm definately a Shawn Lane fan, lol he is great. Same with Blues Saraceno. Sorry barbarelaxe, I realize that if it's being done it's not impossible. I know this is a stupid thread, and I kind of made it on a whim and thought I'd hear about some guitar players I hadn't heard of before, which I have.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Zakk Wylde, or Dimebag, or kirk hammett, Alexi Laiho (SP). Oh ya, one more thing, I know Satch, Vai, Gilbert all these guys, Johnson, the list goes on, I know they are amazing, I know there stuff is amazing, maybe not always blistering fast, but always good. Appologies again on that whole thing, bonehead moment, and I should've just let the thought pass.
Thanks again for the recomendations on players to check out guys.

Kirk hammett is impossible if you don't have a wah pedal...

i'll second listening to Guthrie Govan though i don't agree with the thread

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

I would say Ron Thal. He can write, and has written, many great songs - and he can play insane stuff that is not scales up and down. Listen to albums like Adventures, Hermit and Normal for a good measure. And the fact that he now plays with G'n'R is a prove of him not having practiced scales all his days. He can actually play with a band, not just a metronome/backing track (as many shredders do).

Ron Thal was a great call, he is a great player, but some great writing as well I thought. The "bumblefoot" guitar is cool, he did a great job on "Dont Cry' at least imo.
By the way, I just saw a Guthre Govan song called Fives, that's what I'm talking about, that stuff was amazing! Man, thatguy did some awesome tap/sweep stuff in there.

You have probably heard the "Real" tune by BBf on YouTube. This one is also good: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y93cRIAj0gk

If you're interested in Tony, pick up the first two albums by Planet X. This is where Tony really shines -- when he's playing heavy fusion with musicians who are on his level. The guy smokes. I don't want to sound like a name-dropper but I work for Planet X, and it frustrates me how little known they are. Those who know them have a great deal of respect, though. Allan Holdsworth and Brett Garsed are playing on the latest disc, btw.

You can check out some of the playing on the MySpace page here: www.myspace.com/planetxsite

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

That was totally not what I was expecting. I don't think I've heard anything like Planet X, I really liked it, I think Clonus was prolly my favorite, that or MoonBabies. Thanks for the recomendation, I have to assume you are the Dee from Ibanez.com you were a huge help on there, so I thank you very much for being so helpful on both sites.

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

Yes, same Dee. Thank you.

If you preferred Clonus you might enjoy the rest of the Universe album. It's a heavy album, but not in a thrashy kind of metal way.

We've probably mutually backed this claim at least a hundred times by now, but it's true.

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

Hey waylay00, i found a couple I'll link up here, although they play excerpts or whatever, it doesn't look nearly as effortless as when Shawn does it, lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eMdPa2EQW0-this one didn't recieve good reviews, but I think it does attest to how hard shawn's stuff is. I don't disagree at all with people who say his stuff is incredibly complex, and he was an amazing guitarist.

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?

That was always a good point. It's easy to replicate, but to actually come up with the things they (the "pro's") do is something else entirely. Music is a form of expression, and some of us are able to express ourselves more articulately than others.
