I know- it really is unique too. The more I listen to this stuff the more I realize just how good he is. And the bar control is amazing- it's like a different voice. And it's just a Strat!
You should check out some of his latest stuff if you liked that. I know the older material is more recognized, but I love the past couple of albums. This is from one of them:

I didn't know he covered Yngwie stuff. Vai is one guy that is definately up there as far as the best ever. His control over his instrument is amazing.

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?
Can I just say that
Shawn Lane
is overated, he's a composer that happenned to play guitar, you guys say it's something else to create what he did but that's because he is from an entirely different context and methodology. Any professional composer wouldn't be nearly as impressed by his composition skills (at least the stuff your talking about, imo his best compostions had no guitar in them).
Other worldly guitarists? I can't say there is one, I listen to Chick Corea, Coy Tyner and Herbie Han**** and am bewildered by their harmonic ideas but I have struggled and failed to find anyone close to that on guitar, maybe Pat Martino or Mike Goodrick.

In this piece, he's playing a Zon Hyperbass. This isn't really the flashiest kind of thing he does but it's amazing, none-the-less. Not to mention that it's a wonderful composition. The camera is a little shaky at the start but it goes still quick enough.
That is ****ing amazing

Re: Is there a "great" guitar player?
It doesn't seem right that we talk up ONE guy from a long line of great chicken pickers (many better than Scotty).
Scott Henderson isn't bad at all but most of the time he's playing stuff out of his league and hasn't seemed to have improved over the last 20 years, he was good in CCEB though.
