Law?

A friend of mine, went into a guitar store and tried to buy a guitar but was denied because he wasn't 18 yet. Is there actually a law that states that you must be 18 or over to buy a guitar? That was here in Canada. Is it Like so in.....well, anywhere else? I think that's the most retarded thing I have ever heard.

Re: Law?

Were the staff having a laugh or what? That is really bizarre, unless he was trying to pay via a credit card that wasn't acceptable or something.

What type of guitar was it? If it's one of those Jenna Jameson Jacksons I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: Law?

Here's the deal, first if it was credit card of course that could be reason number 1. But even if paying in cash I have a feeling the store has had more than 1 pissed off Mom coming in and demanding her little Johnny get his cash back after he has probably scratched up and Van Halenized his guitar. Especially when he loses interest 2 months later and Mom paid for 3/4 of the guitar. That's probably the reason why.

Re: Law?

In American law a minor has the right to rescind a contract (as in purchase) even after he/she reaches the age of majority. This essentially means that a guitar (or any item other than necessities) purchased by a minor when 16 can be virtually destroyed and a seller can be obligated to take it and refund the minors money until a "reasonable time" after the age of 18.

Does your friend behave like a minor??? Jumping around, playing star wars in the guitar shop and using the microphone singing pretending to be Prince? Maybe thats the reason he was denied to buy the guitar and not because of his age.

Never stopped me from buying guitars or anything else before I was 18.

Re: Law?

The bottom line is, is it legal? In the USA, I think yeah, a store can refuse to sell something to someone - it's a private business. of course, very rarely would a business WANT to do this, but a couple of examples given above make sense to me.
