Listening to non-guitar-oriented music...

I've recently stopped listening to guitar oriented music as much as I used to. Now I'm listening to a lot of old country, cubanisimo, classical, jazz, pop rock, etc. After listening to this stuff more, it seems as if my playing has improved. I'm a lot more creative now. Has anyone else had this epiphany?

Good music from any genre can only do you good. I'm glad that you're broadening your horizons, but I had to smile when you wrote "cubanisimo". What do you mean by that? Maybe some nice son? Or some mambo or rumba? lol Cubaninismo just means that something is "very cuban" in it's origin. It's not a style of music though perse.

What groups are you listening to from Cuba? I can send you a few songs if you don't already have them. But please tell me that you're not listening to Willie Chirino. hehehehehe

No, not that, LOL. I honestly don't know the name. It was this brightly neon colored CD with the Spanish exclamation points (upside down in front, regular on end) and it said "Cubanisimo!"

hahahahahahahahahaha Oh okay, one of those CD's. hehehehehehe I know what you mean. They are like party mixes. That's cool. I have some of those as well. Man, if you like those party mixes you need to check out Puerto Rican Power, Grupo Mania and Los Hermanos Rosario. They're merengue out of Puerto Rico and they're great to dance to. I'm on a different computer right now than I usually am, but I think this Itunes has a couple of songs I can send ya.

Waylay, pm me your email address and we can chat about some old school salsa and contemporary Jazz music that will broaden your creative flow in different ways.

Jimmy

Florida, I can't believe you said Willie Chirino. I got that song "Caribe" playing in my head now (the one he did with Angela Carrasco back inthe 80's). I need to go listen to something before I go crazy...

I'm starting to listen to more Lao/Thai music! It is really wierd if you have never heard it before, but I grew up with my mother listening to it.

But every time I listen to some, I have to listen to brutal death metal afterwards to neutralize the metal imbalance.

hehehehehehehe I can't stand him! hehehehehe The only song of his that he ever wrote that I liked was Nuestro Dia Ya Viene Llegando. And that's mostly because I have half of my family still in Cuba suffering under Castro.

Ugh! I can't STAND reggaeton! The only reggaeton song that I can even stomach is La Tortura with Shakira and Alejandro Sanz. And that's only because Alejandro is singing. lol Really it's more of a reggaeton/vallenato mix anyway rather than pure reaggaeton.

Re: Listening to non-guitar-oriented music...

I would say about 75% of what I listen to involves no guitar what so ever. When I get to recording songs and such, I expect to have no guitar solo's and probably very little guitar. I just think that guitar solo's are very outdated, and a thing of the past. They also don't add much to a song to non-guitar playing listeners.

Wait a minute, what am I doing on Jemsite?

I was driving to work this morning and listening to xm and they started playing a song by Brian Tarquin called One Arabian Knight. If you guys feel like taking a break from shred, listen to that song for some subtle guitar work that blends incredibly well with the piano and bass lines.

I listen to classical and jazz. Still, a lot of jazz is guitar-oriented.
