Recommend me some jazz!

I'm looking for something rhythm oriented with a real groove to it, something quick and centered around a major key. Preferably something with a lot of room for experimentation and improvisation.

Groove eh? Try:
Miles Davis -- On the Corner -1972

Don't ask me what key it's centered around though..

Larry Carlton can be funky. Most jazz players love minor keys so good luck. Sex Mob if your feeling wierd.

Kenny Garrett (no, not THAT Kenny G).
A saxophonist with some really fast, upbeat stuff.

Re: Recommend me some jazz!

Looking for Jazz or Fusion? Something simple with a groove? Try some Billy Cobham.... Spectrum. Tommy Bolin played guitar on the album. It's a pretty good album for a first introduction to jazz-rock/fusion. Simple grooves..... good guitar work for when the album was produced and you could comp to it with ease.

Or are you talking about something based on rhythmic/chord comping...? Jazz guitar has a couple of sub genre too so you might want to be more specific.....

Here look at this:

Jazz is an acquired taste, you realy need to know that going in or you may never fully develop your appreciation for it. If you want to start out with stuff that is both fun to listen to and as intricate as you'd hope, I would second Lefty Robb's choice of Jimmy Bruno. He's Joe Pass' direct successor basically, and he has crazy speed and awesome chops. He's also very jazzy and a ton of fun to listen to. Burnin' is a great one to start with, and you can probably grab a copy at a local library.

Re: Recommend me some jazz!

many guitarists have been inspired by jazz sax players like Coltrane

Giant Steps - John Coltrane track Mr PC is straight ahead, fast and good for improv

If you get Giant Steps, might as well listen to

Coltrane recorded Giant Steps within days of blowing on Kind of Blue.

Kind of Blue - Miles Davis

kind of blue takes you into the bop style in a gentle way

A couple of good fast numbers on Mingus Ah Um - Charles Mingus

Also check out Cannonball Aderley Septet

I'm quite a big jazz fan actually; I've just never really encountered much upbeat jazz centered around a major key, which is what I'm looking for.

Re: Recommend me some jazz!

OK, gotcha. But, if you're chord substituting on every chord once you're through the first verse, and changing modes on top of the chord substitutions, it all gets fairly wacky pretty quickly. I'd still check out Burnin' or anything else by Jimmy Bruno

Wes Montgomery - I just saw a cool lesson on one of his tunes, 4 to 6 (I think that was the name). The lesson was on youtube given by a guy with a thick accent but it is a cool tune and he does a good job of shoing the changes.

Chuck Mangione? I don't know if it's directly what you're looking for, but thought I'd throw it out there...
