Housekeepers at Beckham mansion arrested for 'stealing items and then selling them on e-bay'

A couple who worked as housekeepers at David and Victoria Beckham's mansion have been arrested on suspicion of stealing personal items from them for sale on e-bay.

Victoria's parents Tony and Jackie Adams raised the alarm after they spotted trinkets and items of clothing for sale on the internet auction site which they recognised.

When Mr and Mrs Adams travelled to the Beckhams' seven-bedroom home they discovered the items were missing and alerted police last Friday.
Inside job: Housekeepers at David and Victoria Beckham's Sawbridgeworth mansion have been arrested for theft

Police believe unique items, worth thousands of pounds and collected by the couple on their travels abroad, were taken from the £3.5million property dubbed Beckingham Palace.

A source close to the investigation said: 'Some of the things were given to them as presents and are unique because they were specially made for them.

'They include mostly small but expensive trinkets and some pieces which were on decorative display. Together they add up to quite a high value.

'They (Tony and Jackie Adams) apparently recognised them as things which had either been given to David and Victoria or bought by them and placed in their home in Hertfordshire.

Protected: The Beckhams employ a large team to look after their Hertfordshire mansion while they are away in Los Angeles

'It seems that the property was being offered on the website to the highest bidder - and obviously it may have had the Beckham pedigree attached.'

Detectives contacted the auction site to obtain the sellers' details, which they traced to an address in Nazeing, Essex.

There they arrested a 56-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man. It is not clear whether the Beckhams were at home when the theft took place.

They divide their time between Los Angeles and Hertfordshire, but employ a core of staff who have keys to the mansion, including housekeepers who look after the property while they are away.

The Grade II listed house, bought for £2.5million in 1999, has been protected by a large team of security guards ever since their son Brooklyn was subject to a kidnap threat in 1999. It has two lines of fencing with watchtowers and cameras to keep intruders out.

Set in 24 acres, the mansion has an indoor swimming-pool, a recording studio, a bathroom devoted to Victoria's idol, Audrey Hepburn, a snooker room, a gym, floodlit tennis courts and a nursery with a domed ceiling and fibre-optic stars, in which a mural depicts David and Victoria as a fairytale prince and princess.

A spokesman for Hertfordshire Police said: 'Police are currently investigating an allegation of theft from a private address in Hertfordshire.

'The theft was reported to police at 4.45pm on Friday October 10.

'A 56-year-old woman from Essex and a 55-year-old man also from Essex have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently on police bail.

'They are due to return to Hoddesdon police station on 22 November.'
