My last band opened up for: zz top, 38 special, loverboy, edgar winter, candlebox, to name a few. I've also had the pleasure to meet Satch.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

While I was in college I worked at one of Ric Flair's gyms. I met numerous wrestlers. Some of the bigger names from that experience: The Rock, Steve Austin, Paul White (The Big Show), Ric (of course) and his son David, Chris Jerico, Kevin Nash, Bill Goldberg (former Charlotte Panther), Ken Shamrock, Hulk Hogan, Diamond Dallas Page, Scott Steiner, Raven, Roddy Piper, Mick Foley, Sting, Las LERoux, Jeff & Matt Hardy, Buff Bagwell, Kane, Chris Benoit, Undertaker, Curt Henning, Tripple H (Hunter Helmsley), Edge, Christian, Kurt Angle, Hardcore Holly, Test, Scotty 2 Hotty, Dustin Rhodes. I think that's about everyone.

After college I went on to work for a race team where I met and worked with: Richard Childress, Dale Earnhardt, Kurt Busch, Casey Mears, Jack Roush, Robby Gordon, Mark Martin, Kase Kahne, Ray Evernham, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Terry Labonte, Joe Gibbs, Tony Stewart, Greg Zipadelli, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Elliot Sadler, Ricky Rudd, Bill Elliot, Johnny Sauter, Ken Schrader, Dave Blaney, Bill Davis, Rick Hendrick, Robert Yates, Jamie McMurray, Todd Parot, Kevin Harvick, Jeff & Ward Burton, John Andretti, Kyle & Richard Petty, Dale Jarrett, Michael Waltrip, Darrell Waltrip, Jimmie Johnson, Chad Knaus, Jeremy Mayfield, Joe Nemechek, Dale Jr., Johnny Benson, Sterling Marlin, Mike Skinner, Scott Wimmer, Kevin LaPage, Boris Said, Kenny & Mike & Rusty Wallace, Todd & Brett & Geoffrey Bodine, Morgan Shepard, Jeff Fuller, Randy LaJoie, Ted Musgrave, Steve Park, Jerry Nadeau, Jimmy Spencer, Ricky Craven, Bobby Hamilton, Shawna Robinson, Wally Dallenbach, Chad Little, Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Jeff Hammond, Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds, Chris Myers, Matt Yocum, Phil Parsons, Rick Allen, Jeanne Zelsko...

Geeezz, I think that's about everybody.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

Well, I judged a piping contest with Bob Worrall on Saturday. For those of you not interested in bagpipes (i.e. damn near everyone), Bob's a Canadian individual piper, one of the top ten worldwide for much of his career, theoretician, historian, TV commentator and all round afficionado. Probably one of the best known names in the field (which people not involved in will think of as obscure, but has an immense following).

Sort of like sharing a stage with Rush.

Your father must work at a pretty "space-age" place.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

Actually it's a very hi-tech powerplant. But they still built many set around it.

It will be the skeleton of the Enterprise while it's being built on land. My dad is going to be a dude working on it. Which, is different than the originals, because the Enterprise was built in space dock. But this is a re-imaging of the original Trek story so they can change as many things as they want I hink.

I feel like a dweeb talking about it though, 'cause it's not that cool. ANd it's not really worthy of telling others and by no means is it real "name droppping."

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

I've got a few show openers, but nothing like some of the contacts a lot of you guys have, I'm amazed.

Met DT in '94 on the awake tour, it was Derek's 1st tour with DT after Kevin Moore left. Derek was very cool after that show, just a nice guy.

My Bands have opened for Dangerous Toys, Shotgun Messiah, Enuff Z'Nuff, and I'm hoping some more in the future.

I recently met Vai on the Last tour, had my drummer botched the pic by putting his thumb in front of the flash.

On a related topic, the way I met DT was I got the passes through a girl my drummer worked with. She was not his type, but she had it bad for him. He stood her up, so I got the pass and went back stage to meet them. At any rate, she just said she had 'connections' and could get us backstage just about anywhere. Well, not too long after Joe Lynn Turner broke away from Yngwie, he came to my old home town. I figured I'd see if I could get passes fro that show. The girl called in her "connection" and got it arranged.
I and the drummer show up, collect our passes and make our way inside.
We're standing around just waiting for the place to fill up, which it never really did. We're approached by a couple guys asking us if we were the drum and guitars techs for Skid Row. Welp, I think I know now how she was getting us passes
We were shown the door. They were scrutinizing all the free passes, mainly because no one showed up for the show. We were a lil annoyed that we were shown out, us being the techs for Skid Row and all...

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

I played a gig with my band Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks (http://myspace.com/joyshannon) in fall of last year and at the last moment Joy told us that we had a cellist playing with us for that gig but that he was playing for free and our pay wouldn't change. We are loading our gear and I'm introduced to him. He says his name is Steve.

We start sound checking a few minutes before the gig and I hear him playing some absolutely insane licks on cello, but didn't really think much of it. We play the gig and it goes extremely well. Joy introduces her band about a quarter way through the set and introduces Steve as the cellist for a local pilates studio.

After the gig we are hanging out in front of the club and I'm introduced to his friend who says "You remind me of this guy...I don't know if you'd know him...Steve Vai?" He and I get into this long conversation about how I'm related to him and how great he is, all of that kind of stuff. We divide up the cash and part ways.

I found out about a month later, on the back of a Dream Theater CD I was looking to purchase at a record store, that "Steve" was actually Steve Velez, the cellist for The String Quartet Tribute.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_String_Quartet_Tribute

When I later spoke with him, he said that playing the Dream Theater tribute CD was the hardest thing he has done.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

A friend of mine got me tix and backstage passes to Joe Satriani a few years back and I got to meet him (couldn't believe how short he is!). I also met Matt Bissonette, who was playing bass with him at the time. Being a big David Lee Roth fan, it was cool to meet someone who had played with him (even cooler, his brother Greg is a beast of a drummer). He is originally from Michigan and so he sat with us and talked about how pathetic the Lions were (are) and all sorts of stuff. We still email from time to time. He's a genuinely nice guy.

Addendum.
I was in a movie called "Lets Go to Prison"
I was on set with Dax Shepard and Will Arnett, does that count?
Bob Odenkirk directed, fun movie.
I was a "white Kingdom" member in the film.
