Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

Pretty decent list of guys I've met :

Trivium - Back when they were good (before Crusade), they came around with Children of Bodom and Amon Amarth. They were pretty down to earth guys.

Children of Bodom - Same night as Trivium show. In support of when "Are You Dead Yet" first came out. Wicked nice, no ego to them at all.

Bullet For My Valentine - I didn't intend on meeting these guys it just kind of happened. I was seeing Rob Zombie at the Palladium and they were with them. So, after being in the pits for a while I went outside and they were just out chillin and having a smoke with a few others.

Dream Theater - During their Prog Nation tour I had a backstage pass. Very cool guys, Portnoy is all about the fans. Petrucci seems very reclusive and not into the spotlight despite the fact he completely dominates on guitar.

MC Chris - Met him at Warped Tour last year. All about the fans and wants to have a good time all the time. Hangs out at merch table after his shows so theres a good chance to meet him.

In the next few months I'll hopefully meet :

Matisyahu
Symphony X (already have backstage pass)
Amon Amarth
Gym Class Heroes
Iced Earth (they're doing meet and greet but I don't have a pass, so I'll wait by the bus)
Dragonforce
Powerglove (on tour with Dragonforce, plus they're local so it's likely)

In the further interest of name dropping, you can read my latest half-our chat with Satch on my blog. Hehe.

Also, about 6 weeks ago I met Trivium at a CD listening party. They weren't yet finished mixing Shogun at the time, so there were only 3 completed mixes. and 5 incomplete ones. Then they said they'd just got another rough mix emailed to them, and proceeded to crank the 12-minute title track for the assembled media. It was way cool.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

Well I used to be a bit like Petie, but not about guitars just the punk/hard core/indie scene and not for anything major. I have met a few bands and done some intervies.

Thrice-Nice and polite and very informative in interviews

Coheed and Cambria (big hair guy what's his name?)- anyways, nice but distant when you talked to him liek he wanted to be elswehere, can't blame him though.

hmmm I can't remember the others off hand but it wasn't many and it was alright. The funny thing is though, now I couldn't care a lick to listen to any of those bands at all.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

I only have a few, since I'm a young'n but to me they were quite special and in some cases humourous.

Jim Marshall - I still don't know how to feel about my chance encounter with him. I met him at the London Guitar Show in 2006 (5 maybe?) I had no idea he would be there but when I was checking out the Marshall booth I noticed a line forming around the front side, so I tagged along to see what the fuss was all about and since everybody was reaching for the freebie Marshall posters I guessed an endorsing artist would be there. Lo and behold, its Jim Marshall. None of us got to chat with him, which is perhaps for the best as he was very ill. He was in a wheelchair with a small oxygen tank beside him in case he felt any worse, and a medic was standing by in the corner. I felt very sad to see him out in public being hassled for autographs when he looked as though he should be in a hospital bed, but felt an overwhelming sense of admiration for someone willing to do such things for Marshall fans. A year later at the next LGS, they had a giant "Get Well Soon!" card at the Marshall stand for Jim, who was in hospital. I asked to see the card and the rep said sure, then went to assist somebody checking out some equipment. I didn't read the card until after reaching over the desk for a pen and signing my name with a get well message. My mate and I noticed it had been signed by all the performers at LGS.

Rick Parfitt - Down to earth guy but also quite boring. He's very much the image of "yer dad in a mid life crisis" but still, a nice guy.

Michael Angelo Batio - GIT. He was doing a guitar clinic in a pub the next town over for Sharon Music. Instead, he decided to play a one hour gig to a cd with backing tracks. That was quite enjoyable and he took a break half way through for questions. He managed to turn every question into a story about how talented he is and wouldn't answer the original questions. When he spoke, it was "me, me, me, me, I'm the best". Afterwards he offered to sign autographs and allowed people to get a picture taken with him. He was very short with everyone and would tend to say "Ok NEXT!" once the signing and photo was taken. When it was my turn, as I walked off the small stage having received my signed cd and poster, I said to him that I really enjoyed the show and some of the stuff he did just floored me. "I know" he replied, and not in the jokey way. To make matters worse, my then girlfriend gets up on the stage for her autograph and picture. She was the luckiest person there, kind of. He was very happy to answer all of her questions, offered to autographed her chest to which she politely declined, so he signed her stomach, and edged the signature down

and down

and down

and... her hand guided him briskly back up. After being asked what she was doing later, she quickly replied, "WE *points to myself and mates* are going for a drink". It was kind of sad seeing a man who I used to think was great act in such ways that night. Also, he's quite humourous to watch, just as a person. Very strange voice (ok fair enough, that can't be helped and shouldn't be held against him) and quite interesting hair, he had to arch his head back slightly to look forward because his fringe had grown over his eyes. Time for a hair cut me thinks.

Former Prime Minister John Major - He gave a speech at my school when I was 17, very funny guy and gave some sound advice that helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

Wim Roelants - I first met him at the 2006 London Guitar Show. I've met up and hung out with him t the 07 and 08 shows. A really approachable, friendly guy who just emanates an auro of pure rock legend. Since first meeting him in 06, the LAG booth has been the first place I go to at LGS, not for the gear (although it is nice) but to see Wim's set and have a chat. He really cares about his fans too, I was amazed that after having just one short conversation in 06, he remembered who I was before I'd even said anything when I approached him in 07. Such a great man and an incredible guitar player. Also whoever the girl was at 07 taking his photographs and generally helping him out, girlfriend, manager, pr, I don't know, but damn she's cute.

Steve Vai - LGS 07 He was doing a guitar clinic on this day and was warm, friendly, informative and very funny. I'll never forget his response to the guy who said "Oh my god I can't believe I'm talking to Steve Vai!" after being given the mic in the Q&A session, Steve's response? "I can't believe I AM Steve Vai!" I saw him just out of the corner of my eye shortly after the clinic and got a little star struck and said "...it's....YOU! :O" and yes, he replied "its...me?" and smiled. Steve comes across as the kind of guy you'd love to have as a friend. (As does Wim too!)

My dad's got loads of good stories for name dropping, he's met many interesting people in his career but I don't think I have much truck trying to compete with him.

One last one guy's. What do you do when Keith Richards tells you, "Don't do anything I would do"? Because I just kind of stood there looking like a melon trying to figure out what on earth he doesn't do. (Chance encounter in a bar two years ago)

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

This is a pretty cool thread. I've been fortunate to have met tons of musicians but I'll list the most notable and leave out the few bad eggs. Everyone here that I've met or hung with has been really cool.
*George Lynch-favorite guitar player, met at a Lynch Mob show years ago and various clinics. Was very nice everytime I met him.
*Yngwie-met him twice. Once from a show we opened for him a long time ago and then again very briefly about 8 years ago.
*Warren DeMartini and the guys from Ratt-all cool dudes and Talking gear with Warren is always an educational experience.
*Stephen Pearcy-opened for him a few weeks back. Hung out after the show. Cool dude.
*White Lion-also opened for these guys about a month ago. Didn't talk to Mike Tramp but the drummer, Troy and the guitarist, Jamie were very cool. I stay in touch with Troy kind of based on an unfortunate event. The night we played the show together, some lowlife(s) stole a bunch of their stuff including one of the bass players 8x10 cabs--of all the things to steal-an 8x10!!!!?? No one ever found out who did it. Another reason I hate leaving gear in the car.
*Rudy Sarzo and Adrian Vandenberg-from the Whitesnake days, doing a clinic tour for Peavey-this was a long time ago but I remember they were not hesitant at all to talk to anyone and were decent guys.
*Vinnie Moore-another virtuoso guitarist that I feel fortunate to have met and also one of the nicest guys period.
*Billy Childs (Britny Fox)-Played a show with these guys recently. Approachable guy and easy to b.s. with.
*Poison-met these guys a few times when I was younger. Mainly talked with C.C. and bugged him with trivial questions about BC Rich guitars.
*Shadows Fall-I've known Jay Bittner for ages. remember jamming out Slayer and Testament tunes with him in my basement. Coolest dude and I'm happy for him reaching the level of success that he has but he deserves it because he's one of the best drummers out there. I will never ever do Jager-bombs with any of these guys again.

I'm sure there's more. Been playing shows from '90 on. Took a break, because the scene was awful there for the majority of the late 90's and am back into it on a regular basis again.

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

Joe Satriani - I was at the LGS with my mate and we were walking around not really paying attention to where we were going. Then I found myself in the middle of Satriani's little entourage of security and staring him right in the face for about 2 seconds. [Some security huh?]

It didn't hit me until he had just gone past!

Guthrie Govan - met him at LGS 07 / 08 he also teaches at my university in Brighton - The most humble person to live... seriously

Re: The official Name Dropping thread.

A few weeks ago I had an amazing interview with John McLaughlin (if you're in Australia you can read it in next month's Mixdown magazine, and it'll be on my blog in the second week of January). It was a very educational and inspiring experience.

Also interviewed George Lynch recently and he was quite nice and accommodating.

And I interviewed Michael Angelo Batio a few weeks ago, and he was very informative and chatty.

Well, he signed the strap I use for my main guitar and I have a picture on my phone and if I can figure out how the hell to get it on the computer I'll upload it

TL;DR - Good

Is MAB a nice guy? He seems like he's be the kinda guy that you could have a decent conversation with without him bringing up his many records and such.

Lol Is Paul a nice guy? I tried to edit my last post to ask that beacuse he seems so friendly and cool, unlike Malmsteen who seems self centered.
