Question

What album or song helped you play better??

I had someone ask me today what songs I played along with
that helped my playing get better. I'm not talking about what tone
you like or who you like to listen to. I'm talking about who did you
sit and play to for hours & hours in the "woodshed" to develop your style.
Tell who and why you listened to who you did..
I thought this might be a good discussion topic.
My albums are:

For rhythm playing there were 2 major ones.

1. Iron madien- Powerslave. That whole record helped me get
better. I still paly to it. My picking acuarcy good A LOT
better when I learned "Losfer Words (Big `Orra)" learning that
song (in the beginning) just wore my picking hand out .
It helped build hand strength as well. Also, I would try to come up with
the 3rd part of the harmony on the lead parts.
2. Metalica- Black Album
3. Stone Temple Pilots-Core

Lead..I was all over the place. My dad tried to get me to play to different
music styles to get some variety..I'm GLAD I did
My main ones were:

1.Joe Satriani-Surffing With The Alien & Not Of This Earth
Surffing made me want to get into instrmental guitar...
2.Yngwie Malmsteen-Rising Force (speed, speed, speed!!!)
3.Koinonia-(live album can't remember the name of it) a Christian
fusion band with a guitar player named Hadley Hawkinsmith.
He has feel like Billy Gibbons does..
4. Al De Meola-Elagant Gypsy (I learned the Spanish/latin style with a little rock influance to it)
5. Jeff Beck-Wired (He taught me how to play "what ever you feel at the moment")
6. Steve Vai-Passion & Warfare (He taught me how to play with ATTITUDE!!!)

The Black album, and Master of Puppets were huge for me. Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God was another one I spent a lot of time with, same goes for A best of Pantera CD. I'm not talented enough to play along with any of the Lead stuff you listed.

In my formative years, there were 4 albums, err CDs that helped my define my style:

KISS - Alive!
Van Halen 1
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live
Diary of a Madman

Ok as far as Albums go I'd say:
Tokyo Tapes and world wide live
The wall
Beast from the east
screaming for vengence/Defenders of the faith
Rising force/Trilogy
sacred heart
ride the lightning
and many other 80's albums

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

When I got my guitar I locked myself in my room for 2 weeks and learned Phantom of the Opera haha!

Then maybe Rust in Peace by Megadeth (Sweep picking, trem picking)

Malmsteen's Far Beyond the Sun. I spent months just working on the first few minutes of the song.

Loads! Here's a few...

Allan Holdsworth - Atavachron
Planet X - Anything
Greg Howe - Anything
Tony MacAlpine - Maximum Security
George Lynch - Dokken's Tooth & Nail LP
On The Virg - Serious Young Insects (that's how a 7-string should sound!)
Iron Maiden - Powerslave (come on, I was young!)
Metallica - Kill 'Em All
Van Halen - Van Halen 1
Vinnie Moore - first two albums
Hendrix - Anything (one of the first things I ever played on guitar was Purple Haze when I saw it on TV and copied his finger positions)

Too many to mention, really.

necrophagist, german technical death metal, these guys are amazing, i learned a song called 'stabwound' of their new album "Epitaph" and it improved so much of my attitude and technique becuase it has all modern techniques and Mumhammed Sucimez has alot of technical solo's, BUT i still find them running through my head cus theyre quite catchy indeed, check them out if your willing for technique improvement
