Can i ask how old you are dude?
Your job kinda reminds me of the movie 'whats eating gilbert grape'... is that a fair guess? Im guessing you dont look like johnny depp either!!!! LOL!!!
Either way mate, i admire what you do!! Horns high man!!!

I briefly worked with people with muscular dystrophy....(degenerative muscle disease) and it makes you thankful for the simple fact you can wipe your own butt...literally!!!!
Made some great friends and had really felt good with how i helped them......then my life changed, but thats another story in itself!!!!

Again mate, kudos
First off, buddy, I'll have you know I look just like Johnny Depp. My mom tells me I'm a very handsome young man...

Anyway, I'll be 27 next month. Honestly, I don't think I would've had the patience for a job like this in even a couple of years ago. I don't think the job is quite like that movie either. You are thinking of the silly and gentle type of mentally handicapped children. We have the ones with "At-Risk" Behaviors, like aggression, self-abuse, running away and truancy, stealing, etc. And a lot of our kids are high functioning.
The main issue with our kids is the fact that a majority of them are permanent wards of the State of Michigan. And those few that aren't are usually adopted. Very few are still with their birth parents. The kids have been removed from their homes for a variety of reasons, usually physical and sexual abuse and neglect. I could really go on and on with some of the stories our kids have that could put any hollywood horror movie to absolute shame.
Our kids are usually permanent or temporary state wards, adopted but maladaptive and so require help, or in some cases their IQ is too low for them to go to a juvenile detention center so they come to us. Those last ones are usually the real bastard part of the job.

Here's a web address that can explain it more. It won't though. I didn't understand any of this stuff until I started working there.
