Your first REAL song...

What was the first song/songs you learned how to play? Of course with the exception of Mary Had A Little Lamb or 3 Blind MIce. Also what year was it?

Mine were...

You Got Another Thing Comin'-Judas Priest
Living After Midnite-Judas Priest
Breaking The Law-Judas Priest

All were learned (not perfected though ) the same week in the summer of 1983, for my first band.

And yes, that does make me old...

Re: Your first REAL song...

Hmm...let's step into the way-back machine...

Probably "Tall Cool Woman in a Black Dress" by the Hollies; which I learned circa 1982. Still love that reverb-drenched intro riff. That's probably the first song I learned to play from start to finish. Also, anything I could copy from my parents collection of "old" LP's (which ranged from '50's standards to the Beatles all the way up to Abba, ELO, and the Bee Gees...remember, they weren't, strictly speaking, a disco band...)

After that, lots of AC/DC, of course, and then immediately into the '80's hair band thing. Followed by stabs at Yngwie, obsessions with Satch and Vai, and so on.

Re: Your first REAL song...

Great thread!! My first all the way through was Blackbird by the Beatles. I still remember my guitar teacher gave me the tab for that, and I learned it in a week. At my next lesson I was struggling through a alternate picking Mel Bay excercise (in clefs, not tab), the teacher left to make a copy and I started playing Blackbird. When he came back in he said "I see what you've been working on..." I stopped taking lessons after that, and went to tab. I do still wish I had stuck with learning to read music too, though...

I like the Bee Gees a lot man, and Reb Beach did do some session work with them...That alone gives them credibility

Eagles' Hotel California... everyone was hooked on the song and I worked on it for months to make the school band, which I did.

same time as the Guns n roses one, did you learn theirs or the original?

First song all the way through for me was Metallica's 'Where ever I may Roam' that would of been in early 1993 time (was in Guitar for the practising musician magazine)

Me too! Two chords - no worries! The solo took a while longer though.
Also "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones.
