Bad technique or equipment?

David i was watching your video of you playing.

I wanted to ask you a question on technique, i have spent the last few weeks trying to adjust/re adjust my right hand picking palm, so i can mute my strings i am not playing because so many strings are ringing out. i wonder if you have ever had this problem and how you over came it, it is extremely fustrating for me right now.

do i need a compressor or noisegate? could they help? or is my action too low? over the internet all i can seem to find is 'use your palm' but it is not very detailed at all.

thanks in advance,

damien.

Practice very slowly, and then pay very much attention to it (the muting). Then gradually increase speed and you'll see you will unconciously mute the strings.

I know it's always the same practice practice practice story, but that's reality.

A noisegate will definately decrease noise (!), but then however you're only covering up the symptoms, not the cause of the string ringing noises.

My $0.02.

thanks krizz, if anyone else has in detail more information it would be appericated.

krizz i tend to mute completely or not at all, i'm not sure my hands in the right position and also the faster i play the more it sounds obviously.

too many pull off sounds, driving me crazy.

Take it easy, don't kick yourself, NEVER GIVE UP!

Well, if it's too difficult to do it on your own, you might want to search a descent guitar teacher.

Of course one can be self taught, nothing against it, but I always think that having personal lessons with a guitar teacher really accellarates the learning process.

I usually use my left hand a lot as far as muting strings is concerned. My right hand usually mutes only the bottom strings (E, A, D) with the palm.

I use my left hand index finger to mute any string below the one I'm playing at that given moment.

Hope that's clear and useful.

yup, that's the best way of muting. you don't generally palm mute the 3 higher strings, so using your index finger to mute the strings to prevent the notes bleeding into each other. it's much more useful. if that interests you at all, steve's using the same technique...

I have a hard time muting these kind of things
(just some rubbish down there but it gives you the idea)
Code:
------------------------------
-------------------7----------
--------4--5--6-----6-5-4---
------------------------------
Now the things is that when I play that kind of stuff fast I let the open string sound after the 4-5-6 thing so it becomes like this. 4-5-6-0 becase when I remove my finger from the 6 fast it's like a pull-off. Now should I mute this with my right hand or should I just pay special attention to my left hand?
Hope this is clear like this.
