Bending

I am having a lot of problems bending, with making the transition from having the strings I'm bending up into (say B and G if I'm bending E) be pushed up - essentially "grabbed" by the area right below my fingernails and having them slip under my fingertips. I need to be able to do it so there is no excess noise, and it feels right. My action is fairly high so it's not my guitar. I was wondering if anybody had any insight for this- I already use right hand muting etc.. Plus I heard Dave uses very low action and I was wondering what his bending technique is. I've made many threads about this in other forums so I doubt I'll get anything here to solve my problems, but it's worth a try. Thanks.

Re: Bending

I tend to mute the surrounding strings with my left hand... Say i'm bending the G string (Don't laugh) with my ring and middle fingers then I'll lay my index finger over the strings surrounding that string to mute it a bit. Not much, just enough to keep it from ringing out...

Try it! Might help !

Re: Bending

i used to have the same problem. i found that when i was pushing/bending my g-string (i encourage your laughter) to my D, G actually ended up underneath it, so when i came back down, i was grabbing the D by accident. hope that makes sense. if not, too bad because im lazy!

Re: Bending

I judge my action by bending. If the bent string is going under another, the action is too high. If it's being bent into another string, then the action is fine.

Re: Bending

What do you mean when you say bent into another string? Like the strings you bend up into are basically on the fretboard and under your fingertips as well?

Meaning when you bend the string, say high E - does it touch (bend directly into the B) or does it go UNDER or over the B.

Doesnt steve us a fairly high action though dave? Maybe you could clear this ideal up for us, as the old pictures of evo on vai.com show an action i would estimate at being around 4mm high at the 12th fret allowing for maxium pull up range of every note on the fretboard

Re: Bending

Steve's action seems pretty low to me.

Re: Bending

Sniperfrommars, is that action you said of 4 mm from the wood or the frets?
