Question

Dave Quick Question?

Hey Dave,

Do you know of a way I could change my midi backing tracks into real instruments?

With somekind of software package or something?

Thanks In advance

Darren

Re: Dave Quick Question?

Any DAW software such as Protools, Nuendo, Cubase, Logic should be able to import your midi tracks and let you can change the instrumentation as you like.

Re: Dave Quick Question?

I think he's asking about making a midi drum beat (as an example) into a real drum beat, to make it sound like a live band. Not changing say, a Guitar midi into a bass midi. In which case, no I dont believe there is. But then again I dont have any high end recording software so I may be wrong.

Re: Dave Quick Question?

If your midi is drums, guitar, bass, whatever.. you can put it into almost any DAW and change it to other drum sounds, other guitar sounds, other bass sounds, etc. Whether or not it can pass for "real" or "live" instruments depends on how good your samples are and how good your engineering/mixing skills are.

Re: Dave Quick Question?

For MIDI drum sounds:

Try displacing the ride or hi-hats to just a little ahead or behind the beat and see how that works.

Definitely play with the levels for each instrument relative to one another. You might want to put some reverb and/or EQ on some of the samples to sweeten the sounds. MIDI drum sounds usually suck in their stock form.

Also, if you want a funky-er feel, make the snare flam a tiny, tiny bit behind the beat.

You might go ask for advice on Ghost Note.com.

Re: Dave Quick Question?

If I'm getting you right, any sampling program should work. I am currently testing CakeWalk homeStudio + Project 5. They are really easy to use and contain a really big sound sample to play with...I haven't gotten around to doing what you want though...
