dave read this

hey dave i was at your show the other day in sayerville and you guys were frigging awsome .....but the crowd was like all dead people standing upright
WHAT THE HELLA!! i think i was the craziest mofo there....i started crackin gup laughing when you started twiddling your thumbs to Billy cause you two were just sitting there while Tony and Steve were going at it on the acoustics
but i just dont know how you guys could be soooo frigging awsome and the crowds reaction is just to stand and watch the only reason i could come up with is that they were struckin with amazement and could not react
but dude i dont want to sound like an A-hole but while watching you guys up there with my friend ,i kept saying to myself hey man i think i may be as good as Vai and when i told my buddy this he said "dude....i cant believe it but your actually better than Vai" im like WHAT?!?!?!! he still keeps going on about that... but im only 20 you think its possible? next time you guys are in my area then you'd better tell vai about me so we could duel it out with our guitars man have fun finishing tour

Woh! That's a pretty hefty statement there. Are you saying you PLAY better than VAI or better than VAI overall? IMHO there is more to VAI than his playing. He himself makes note he's not the best shredder, guitarist, etc out there. What makes VAI the success is his COMPOSITION ability, his intense ear for all things, and playing ability to express anything he dreams up. He's also a good entertainer! If he were just a awesome guitarist, it wouldn't be enough...

I won't doubt people play better than him, but to have the complete package that makes VAI the succes he is, is doubtfull.

If you got any tunes, records, etc of some of your stuff we'd love to hear it! Always on the lookout for guitarists supreme of the future!

"Better than _____" has no place in music.

Music is not a sport. People are naturaly competitive, but a statement such as your is simply not quantifiable. All props to you and anyone out there who is an accomplished guitarist.

However, there are many guitarists out there who have the same technical ability on the guitar as Steve or Dave or whoever in terms of speed, accuracy, etc. Some may be even or talented. I am sure Dave and Steve will be the first to admit that even have been blown away by the ability of other guitarists whom they have met but we may never hear about.

There are so many stiles of playing guitar, and so many things to learn and discover from the instrument that playing the guitar and developing your creative senses is an infinite learning process.

Further, just playing the guitar fast and acurate is not enough to make one an accomplished guitarist. Why are there only a handful of shredders left? Becasue they are the only ones who actually had some creative sense of playing and composing, and didn't just play the most complicated arpegios and licks just to show off how fast they can pley them.

I suppose the only true measure of being a good guitarist or musician may be having he ability to compose or play something that touches several million people in a special way. To get several million people to reach a consensus that you play aesthetically pleasing music I think is the greatest amount of gratification that any musician can have.

No matter what, keep playing (for yourself or for anyone else). Play because you love it. Not becasue you want to win some guitar duel. That's all show. It is not what playing guitar is about.

Re: dave read this

vjrYa' know, don't take this the wrong way fella, but you would probaly have to have Giant ballz of Gold, steel, cast iron, titanium and whatever else to make a statement like that. Do you have any idea how far statement's like that one will get on this website? First of all, this is Dave's site, if you wanna' make bold statement's like that one, head on over to steves website and make your proclamation there. Listen, I don't know if your as good as you say you are, if you are, great, really.....but I would love to be a fly on the wall when this duel went down. Nevertheless, you need to be careful about the statement's you make and at the very least, show these guy's more respect than that. You stop and think about how long steve has been at this and everything he's had to go through to get where he's at today. Have you ever went to his site and read his journal's? You wanna get to know the real steve vai? go there and read them and then I think you will be able to appreciate him just a little bit more. do you really think you could get up there night after night and do what steve does? he's been doing it since before you were born man, come on........and it's like advjr said, it's not about being a competitor, if that's what motivates you, it will pass, your priorities will change and you will be a better musician for it. If for no other reason because you want to play to feel the emotion from it, play to feel it in your heart and soul, play to pave your own way, make your own music and create something from you, not anyone else, not even steve vai or dave or tony or anyone else. I'm not trying to get down on ya' man, but it's just that i've been listening and following steve since you were like 3 or something and it's just easy to be offended by your statement. I'll tell you what, if you really feel like that, it's the modern age, so get yourself hooked up on a site somewhere and let's see it and hear it. get you a domain somewhere and go for it...............

LOL you're so asking for flames. As good as Vai? Sorry your attitude alone tells me there's no way in hell you are. If you prove me wrong I'll quit guitar right now.

Re: dave read this

For you to be a better guitar player than Vai would require you to be a little lower than GOD! Somehow I don't think that is going to happen. Go ahead and step up on stage with the master, but be forwarned he will crush your Gaint Balls Of Gold! Just my HUMBLE opinion! Somebody clean up this room and lets get back to some good conversation.

Hey, instead of trying to be "better than" why not just be "you"? I guarantee you'll get a lot farther being yourself.

Re: dave read this

hehe...quite a backlash on that remark isn't it. I just wrote up a really long post then decided to cut to the chase. Suffice to say that good is a matter of taste. What's "better" is merely personal craving and "chops" should NEVER have been THE deciding factor of how good someone is. Some people like speed metal and think that's better than Jazz. I disagree because of my taste. I can give reasons such as I like the integrity of jazz, but that's because of my priorities as a listener. I can totally see why someone would like Thrashcore better than classical, even though I don't, once again my priorities are different. The moral of the story: it's all about taste. Vai and Dave seem to appeal to a lot of peoples taste for their combination of musicianship, and bone crushing rock!! But is someone better? the audience is listening and each one is a judge on his own.

I agree with the replies...

Giantballzofgold, maybe this isn't what you were expecting. I agree that you can't really quantify someone's musicianship. Just because, from what you heard, you feel like you may be able to set your metronome faster than Vai's or Dave's, or use all the technique they used, but "better"...doesn't necessarily make you a better musician...

Consider this: David Gilmour never played half as fast as vai, malmsteen, or satriani...but Comfortably Numb still has one of the most unforgettable solos ever.

Re: dave read this

hey dude, its really good to hear that you have the ambition to be a really good guitarist .. but i guess like the other guys, i think at times, we need to be a little humble about our playing. i mean, who are we to judge ones playing! i'm very sure there are certain techniques that you have that might be in some respective way flashier than some of the good guitar players out there. and yeah, the statement you made about yourself is REALLY bold!i personally am not even ready to tell myself that im better than some of my other guitar buddies out there.

anyway, keep on jamming man, who knows by one day, you might be one of those top guitarists up there. good luck.

What are you talking about? I'm better than Vai, too. I'm blonde, and blond hair is WAY better than black.

Vai's no match for me. sorry guys.

Re: dave read this

geez i dident know id get so many people responding to me.let me start off by saying please dont think that i go around and think im so much better than every guitarist ive ever heard cause that would be very wrong of me to do.but i only said to myself that i thought i was as good as vai meaning technically until my friend david kept telling me that i was better technically and in the way i play my emotions through my guitar.i guess i could believe im better technically cause thats not a hard thing to do since i have been playing since i was 6 and im proly in my prime, but as far as the way i express myself through guitar i would have to say you could hear the lyrics through my instrumental(if you know what i mean). It was just something stupid that i thought i'd throw in there but i still would like to hear more of your opinions about this.oh yeah and as far as Steve Vai's knowledge goes on guitar i doubt ill be able to go up agaist that.oh yeah and for the web guy as soon as i get the money together you can count on my mp3's being posted cause that would be awsome but as of now im sorry i have no money or any way to record myself but soon as i do you can count on it

Re: dave read this

one more point i would like to make is that steve vai has lots of idols such as jimmy page and frank zappa and by the time he was my age he had already been a thousand times better than them.you guys know what i mean? even if there is that awsome chance that i could outdo anything vai does which i doubt than i would still be a huge fan......i mean the only person in the world who is a fan of theyre own music is proly just yngwie haha
