Dave Weiner & ROTW
Many issues here!
He has to be good to be in the Vai band, ok, true.
Is Dave a good guitar player, great guitar player, or virtuoso?
ROTW, is so f...ing annoying, anyone agree or care about it? Dude you put the tab up, so why play it in 3 speeds? Play it in one speed, the speed that it's written in or meant to be played in. Everyone who plays it will do what they want with it anyway. So far, I've only liked one & maybe 2 of them. No offense Dave, but just a little bored. Moreover, you are WAY better than me on guitar, I just excpect more from a Vai bandmate.

Re: Dave Weiner & ROTW
well I respect your opinion but I don't agree with you. I wish any other guitarist would do something like this and I only can say thanks to Dave for taking the time on this.
You must have a lot of knowledge about guitar, but i dont have it (i'm a bit lazy for taking lessons heh) so the idea of playing it three times it's very useful in my opinion, I could agree with you in the idea of "Everyone who plays it will do what they want with it" but let's start at least with the correct fingers position, then if you find any other way better go with it.
I don't think the idea of ROTW is just to play a riff in your face and say.. oh well..it seems Dave knows how to play a guitar..
just an opinion

Re: Dave Weiner & ROTW
I think that, when you are working a riff, you start playing it correctly very slow and then you speed up. If the final riff is quite fast (and this is the case), you might not really realize you're playing it correcly or not. So, different speeds can be useful

More from a Vai band mate? What is your problem. What more could you possibly want?
The guy takes time out of his schedule and his week to put stuff up on his website that he hopes will inspire and benefit people who are learning the instrument or that like the way he plays. I think that is doing an awful lot. Not only that, he takes time out to interact with his fans here on Jemsite, and a great deal of people have benefited from that as well as anything that is on his site. If you don't like it fine, but don't shove a well intentioned gesture (and an appreciated one) back down the throat of a guy who goes out of his way for his fans. Save your vitriole for a cause that is deserving of it.
You're bang on about the issues.

Assuming this is intended to be constructive criticism:
Dave and the rest of the guys in the circles that he is a part of are so much better than me that I cannot develop an opinion as to who is better. As a pro player he's transcended anything I've ever tried to do and developed a style that is all Dave. He contributes to the art and I enjoy his stuff.
I need to see the riffs slowed down because I find I miss the nuances and technique when I'm trying to learn riffs at full speed. I find this important. I don't see other players offering this and fully encourage Dave to continue. Dave is a generous guy and I would not like to see this change.
Thank You Dave.

Re: Dave Weiner & ROTW
Sorry, after reading my post today it does sound a little harsh, sorry Dave! Also, I don't dislike him, never said that.
Anyway, Dave, how do you rate yourself as a guitar player and are you a virtuoso? How about others opinions? Me as a guitar player, I know I suck and if others Jemsters heard me they would agree. Dave, sorry again!

I play the riff 3 times so that people can see how the fingering is and hear how the phrasing is at a very slow tempo, then at a medium pace, then at the speed that I usually play it at. That's what you have to do when you're teaching.
I don't rate myself as anything. I don't think any real musicians rate themselves or compare themselves to other players. It's not a competition. As long as you're happy with your own playing, that's all that matters. That said, I 'm very happy with my playing and the direction it's going in. I'm not trying to be Vai, I'm not trying to be a virtuoso. I'm not a shredder, never will be. I'm just out to make good music.
Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinions. If you don't like it, you don't have to watch/listen to it. It's all good man, but I'm from the school that if you don't have anything nice to say, why piss on everyone else's day?
Happy holidays.
Dave

Re: Dave Weiner & ROTW
That's cool Dave! I did come off rude, again, sorry! How many hours do you play a day now, since you are not touring? I might be at your KOP clinic. Do you play any songs, or is it a regular clinic?
I went to a
Zakk Wylde
clinic once....he walked on the little stage with a huge cooler filled with Budweiser canned beer, he talked for a lil' bit, & than he proceeded to play cover tunes (Ozzy, Skynrd, Allman Bros.). It was cool, he had a bass player, drummer, & he sang.

Re: Dave Weiner & ROTW
No worries.
I'll be playing a few of my songs and just talking about my approach to guitar, the gear, the business, etc.
