I just saw on Dave's site that his solo CD, Shove the Sun Aside is finally out. From the samples I've heard.......it's kickin' some ass!

It's definitely on my "to buy" list.

I just heard from Dave. He says his CD is currently for sale on tour and via mail order in the USA soon. It will be available worldwide once the tour is over

I'll send him this thread to see see if he can post more info if time permits... glen

It's out? Man, he's been working on that disc for HOW many years now? I'm curious, I'll have to look into this.

-D

EDIT- dammit, the clips are blocked here at work, and no home net access yet. I may just grab a copy sight-unheard- give a week or two for finances to solidify a bit and then see if i have a few bucks kicking around- just moved, etc.

Judging by the clips on his site, Dave is competent enough but the music is too Vai influenced.
For most of you that might be a good thing but I'll pass.

To give credit where it's due though, too many new instrumental guitarists try and record the fastest runs possible and you can hear them being flat out fast but not clean enough and it shows that they were pushing themselves up to their pick/fret hand coordination limit which makes the songs sound unproffesional.
To see what I mean get something by Fancesco Ferreri or fast Great Kat songs.
Dave on the other hand sounds very smooth and confident and you can hear that he could have gone faster quite easy but instead has decided to give priority to control and smoothnes which shows maturity and confidence in his ability, ie it sounds like he's gone for the "I have nothing to prove so I'm not going to overindulge in speed but in melody".
Good move Dave, hope you go far in the music world.

well said man, good tunes have to sound effortless and seamless.

Althought I don't think that being influenced by Vai is a bad thing, but obv when you tour with someone of Vai's calibre for a while and you have to learn all his songs, its gona rub off...

Is this the same CD we've been waiting for since maybe '99 or 2000? Haven't followed what Dave's been doing in a while but I've heard his stuff over the years and it has always sounded good.

STSA and Dave Raves

Hello,

This is my first post to the board. I figured that Dave might like to read the views of a paying customer.

I was inspired to buy STSA after reading positive comments on the Vai messageboard and I'm glad I did. I received the CD in perfect condition, very quickly, which I appreciated.

Whatever expectations I had were immediately exceeded with my first listen. I find the music unique, melodic and most enjoyable. I certainly agree with Dex's assessment about Dave concentrating on melody rather than speed. What a refreshing change.

I read others' comments about Dave's style being heavily influenced by Steve, with which I agree. However, while I hear the influence, this music is far from being derivative. That is what truly sets it apart.

Furthermore, I am most impressed that Dave had the ambition to educate himself and handle so many different aspects of producing and releasing this CD, as discussed on this site. This is commendable. I can only imagine the long hours he must have spent in this arduous process, not to mention simultaneously honoring all of his responsibilities in the Vai camp.

I'm wondering if there is the possibility of any one-off type shows here in the states. I would be very interested in hearing this music performed live.

I probably come across as overly enthusiastic here, but it is always exciting for me to discover new music that I truly enjoy and a new player worthy of my respect. I've got the best of both with this new release.

I hope this CD does very well. It deserves to be heard.

Vai Infueneced or inspired?]

INFLUENECED means:

2. Power to sway or affect based on prestige, wealth, ability, or position: used her parent's influence to get the job.

2. Factors believed to be caused by the changing positions of the stars and planets in relation to their positions at the time of one's birth.

Inspired means:

Which is it? Vai INFLUENECD ...or INSPIRED?

IMHO....INPSIRED...is the word.......as Hendrix, etc has inspired some many...so has Mr Vai....

as Joe Satriani has said in his recent VINATGE GUITAR MAg interview (page 124) about a person developing their syle and sound...joe said,...

It's conflicting advice: don't listen to anybody else, and listen to everybody. Don't try and be like other players. .....to be original is the dilemma every up-and-coming player is faced with....Eventually, the music we write and how we play reflects our roots, our influeneces , and out opinions about music

I would have said OUR INSPIRATIONS!!! MHO

CYA

Thanks!
