Instructional DVD's

I know there are millions of instrucitonal videos but most feature a bunch of guys showing off their chops. I found the Petrucci video quite satisfactory.
Has anyone come accross some better DVD's out there .... particularly on harmony, phrasing and improv? Has anyone seen the John McLaughlin DVD? Is it worth the $200?

One of the best instructional DVD's I have ever seen... is "Rock Discipline" by John Petrucci. It is pricey, but well worth it. Check out reviews on Harmony-Central... it gets consistantly 5 star ratings!

I still havent managed to get round to buying it yet. Everyone I know loves it. And as you said, it always gets rave reviews. I think I will take the plunge and buy the DVD this week - I have been meaning to for the last 2 years.

I already have it but thanks. I agree that it is one of the best intermediate level instructionals out there. But i am looking for something that incrporates more harmony and counterpoint and perhaps some improv.

Sorry dude

Those are not instrucitonals.
I have seen three of them and besides Rusty's video they are great show off videos with absolute sh*t instruction.

Re: Instructional DVD's

Well, out of these I have seen the Shawn video, and it is a bit more than a showing off, as he shows you some licks, tips & tricks, some different approaches to playing, phrasing etc... Granted, it is not building from ground up, like the Rusty/Petrucci videos, but it does offer some instruction, albeit of a different kind.

As for the McLaughlin vid, you need to be able to sight read music for it (someone tabbed it out, but I think you still see sheet music on the screen). Apart from that, it seems really detailed and apparently goes into quite advanced things. Might be a worthwhile investment if you are planning to get your jazz chops together.
