Just wondering

Dave I have a question thatīs been circling my mind for some time.

How you feel and/or what you think about bootlegs and bootleging?

Iīve seen some bootlegs of Vai shows and those bootlegs have your solo spot in them, how you feel about it?

Re: Just wondering

Well I'm not a big fan of someone taking my method of making a living and just giving it away for free.. ya know? I haven't been a victim of it too bad yet. but i feel bad for the big names who get ripped off all the time.

Re: Just wondering

Ok, thank you for your answer, Dave.

I think that the best way to get live recordings of shows is what Metallica did on the last tour. They recorded the shows and they uploaded them to a special site.

If you wanted one show, you had to register in the site and give a credit card number, then you picked the show or shows you wanted and all that was charged to your credit card and then you downloaded the shows.

I think it could be a good idea for you when you do your own shows (there will be people like me, that canīt afford to do a special trip to go a the concert (with all the pain of our hearts)) or pass the idea to Steve and the guys for future tours.

Re: Just wondering

We could only pray Vai would do something like that. I think he's too hyper-critical of his own playing to do so.

Re: Just wondering

Dave, just wondering: Do you do the only moderating for this section? I know any talk about boots is taboo in the rest of Jemsite.

Re: Just wondering

Well actually I was wondering if he sets the rules, as in can we discuss boots a little more loosely than elsewhere on Jemsite.

I think Buckethead has a site similar to that called "Wedges" where you're able to download videos filmed by Buckethead's 'people' at his shows for a small fee, which is fair enough seeing as for a small price I can see him live in the comfort of my own home since he doesn't seem to have a big enough fan base over here in the UK for him to come pay a visit.

I'm always puttin' that argument forward to my friends when they say they are downloading albums and movies etc...

"how would you feel if someone was stealing from you?...well its the same thing..."

But by saying that they just take the piss outta me for actually buying albums lol...

Re: Just wondering

MetalliJedi: I wasn't accusing you or anything. I was just wondering if we were able to discuss boots here more freely. Because I would like to discuss it in depth, but it seems as though most anytime they're brought up the thread gets locked quick.

I know what you mean. My friends say "I can burn that for you" and even though I agree it's stealing, my main motivation is it's just not the same as actually OWNING the album. Course liner notes aren't what they used to be. I have this great album of Bach on a Moog by Walter Carlos (now Wendy Carlos) and the liner notes talk all about how it was recorded and how the Moog was developed and a bunch of cool stuff. Now we're lucky if we get lyrics.

Ofcourse there is that as well, and I whole-heartedly agree, I look to my left and see my top 17 albums (awkward number I know) three of which are signed by the artist (vai - 7th song, dave - stsa, satch - surfing with the alien special limited edition digi-pak). There's just something about a good album cover that appeals to me.

If you have ever seen T00L's "Lateralus" album you'll know what I mean. I let my friend borrow it for a day to get the jist of what T00L were like...when I got the cd back the case was cracked the sleeve was chipped and I was gutted...I trust 2 people with my stuff now, both are my best friends but they never ask to borrow stuff anyway lol...

Anywayz, stay cool.
