Microphones

Hey Dave,

What microphones do you and Sr. Vai use? Any tips? Thanks.

P.S. Sound issues aside, you guys were great in Boston the other night! I'm already looking forward to your return.

Uh uh. They were silver and mounted vertically not horizontally.

Re: Microphones

There are tons of microphones better than Shure, but if Steve's using a Shure, it's more like this one... the SM57 is a bit low end for professional applications.

Wow...I don't think I know a single pro that doesn't have a couple 57's for live recording or even in the studio. It's a solid mic that get's the job done well

Re: Microphones

Out of the 46 mics used at "The Mother Ship" (Steves Main Studio) 23 are Shure. 15 of the 23 Shures are SM57's. SM57's are used by more Pro's than any other mics around. They are a staple of ever major recording studio.

Re: Microphones

For close miked electric guitar the 57 is a standard. Not the only choice, but a good one. For toms, too. For room mikes, vocals, and acoustic instruments, condensors are usually a better bet. Like all generalities, these are often wrong... ;-)

Re: Microphones

Steve wasn't using SM57s. I'm not sure about Dave.

There is a picture at http://www.vai.com/SightsSounds/2003_album/index.html with a picture of a Legacy cabinet in his studio with three microphones on it. The leftmost mic looks to me to be a Shure SM57.

There is a picture at http://www.vai.com/SightsSounds/achi...004/ah_11.html that shows a Legacy cabinet with a Shure SM57 (tipped at close to 45 degrees from the cone, one of my favorite positions).

I like the SM57. More often than not I have been able to get good guitar sounds out of that mic with very little change in the EQ.

Last time I saw VAI and company live, they weren't using 57's on the guitar cabinets, but I'm not sure what they were or are using live.

Re: Microphones

The SM-57 is the most used mic in the studio at school. It's one of my favorite mics ever. I use it on amps, snares, and toms mainly, but have used them on bass amps before (using an AKG D-112 on my bassist's 1x15 and using SM-57s on the 10" speakers and the tweeter as well as having a direct signal, sounded amazing) among other things. I haven't yet come up with a situation that I couldn't get a great sound with an SM-57 on a guitar amp.
