musical diversity and you

This one is more for DAVE, but anyone can join in.

obviously, to be in Vai's band, there has to be some sort of appreciation of multiple musical genres floating around in each musician. are there any musical styles other than rock that tend to tickle your fancy a bit more than others?

Re: musical diversity and you

Hi George.

I listen to Enya more than any artist. I listen to a ton of different stuff but to be honest, listening to guitar music is on the bottom of my list. I like to find inspiration in other genres and facets of art and translate that to my music. Listening to guitar music over and over again leads to regurgitation.

Great to see another Enya fan! Not allot of us out there! Her harmonies are wonderful and the music just picks you up and takes ya away!

What's your favorite song/album of her's Dave? You hear about the recent upset over "Sumiregusa" in Japan?! What a communication breakdown!

My fav song is probably "Carribean Blue" off of Shepherd Moons

thanks for the speedy reply.

yeah, i don't listen to as much guitar based music as well. i just recently bought a Bulgarin Women's Choir cd, and i am in love with the harmonies and the power of their voices.

i don't listen to much enya, but BOY MY MOM DOES! she likes good music, so this is no slam. i just haven't checked her out.

I have a real guilty pleasure for pop-music. Believe me some of it is pretty embaracing. I guess I can see where the appeal is. When I get into complex moods though I really enjoy Jazz, especially electronic and funk fusions. There's just so much good stuff out there that you can just put on and listen to. over the summer I really got into celtic music and just the simplicity of the single melody lines and stuff.

I'm a big classical fan, personally. Whether it be old or new classical music, I absolutely LOVE IT and I try and integrate it into my playing as much as I can.

Re: musical diversity and you

I'm pretty diverse too. I love Classical, especially stuff from the late 50's. To me the new stuff is as great as the old stuff, composers like Howard Shore prove this. Hip Hop, I gotta say I love The Game, Dre, and the Marshal Mathers LP is still one of my all time favourite albums, even if his latest stuff sucks. Cant stand 50 though, though The Documentary has been on full repeat in my deck for a while now.

Blues I love John Mayall as well as all the SRV stuff. I listen too a wee bit of Jazz too, but not too much.

I listen to Outlandish for my RnB side, but not much else really grabs me.
Unlike some of you it seems I also love listening to guitar based music like Vai, Satch, Yngwie, Gilbert etc. Though my current favourite is Tomoyasu Hotei. Japanese legend, quite possible the most popular solo guitar artist in the world.

I have a love of latin music and spanish rock too, but there are too many artists to name here! Think Santana and Salerosa Chingon!

I alos listen to a helluva a lot to music that was created for video games. They have got some great atmospheres and can really teach you a lot. Worth checking out composers like Frank Klepacki and Don Ferrone, they are composers in its truest form.

Re: musical diversity and you

I spend more time listening to Aphex Twin more than anything else...and I get strange looks off other guitarists because of it lol.

Also, I listen to Ludacris a lot, his style is really really cool. He emphasises certain words for a comical effect, I believe his rhymes are some of the best out there and has some of the best beats around.

Ofcourse there is guitar music as well, but not as much as people often think lol.

Delfino

[Edit] And ofcourse The Prodigy
