Re: Must have ?

Can you play guitar? I mean it's a very open ended question you asked. So let's put it this way. A band is as strong as it's weakest link and if you want tenure in a band it better not be you!!!! (unless you own the recording gear)

Re: Must have ?

I stand at "Start". I want to learn much more. My Guitar Teacher said that must play in a band to become more practice. I want to ask some people here for her meaning about this.

I dont want to be the "Looser" in the band... but if it can help to learn much more like Accords then i want to try it.

Re: Must have ?

I highly recommend playing with a band with other competent musicians! I so miss playin' in one!

Anyway per your question. There are lots of things you should work on, but I will mention the biggie. As with most bands, timing & feel is everything. Band members must learn to tap into each other...to lock into the feel. Bands with members who vary, and don't stay in the groove sound horrible, no matter what your playing. When you hear some say "Man that bands tight". They are expressing how the members are incredibly locked in to each other...not just tempo, but feel...the groove...the emotion...

It doesn't get any better when playin a great tune, your all into it, and everyone is clickin. ....ahhh

Re: Must have ?

I think firstly improve your theory on the guitar first learn scales and how they form the chord and blah blah blah. And then be friendly with a band (find a good one) then join them as a ryhthm guitarist. Then after sometime when your playing is matured you'll know where you're going

Through my experience a rhtym guitarist and a solo guitarist is different. Here in my country if you want to be a good guitarist first you have to be in a band. Mostly will except you as a rhtyrm guitarist and as your reputation increase than you'll have to find your own way cos being in a band you don't get to shred like mad or bring out your own idea. Then masybe you can be a sessionist

Re: Must have ?

I think the most crucial part of having a band where no one feels like the "loser" is having a tightly knit group of people. Dont bother starting a band with someone you arent comfortable with just because they are the type of musician you need. That is how tension is created, and tension is NOT a good thing in a band.

Now as far as skills go, if your just beginning and trying to start a band. You dont need to have incredible chops or technique, the most important thing is having a basic knowledge of what your actually doing, in turn letting you communicate musically to the other members of your band.

Some things to practice would be the notes on the fretboard, scales and modes, and basic chords and barre chords.

If you would like more specific help with these things i would gladly help you, just let me know.

Re: Must have ?

http://www.musictheory.net

Thats a site where I learnt most of my first music theory stuff. It also has a good tool for ear-training

http://www.guitartricks.com

That site has many, many examples of techniques from bending, to alternate picking right the way down to chicken picking, and on the lesser part; nose picking

Also, learning songs is a great way to practice those techniques, I personally recommend the Power-tab software, its free and has a lot to offer beginners.

http://www.power-tab.net/downloads.php - Thats the link to the powertab software

http://www.powertabs.net/ - Thats the link to the tab-resource.

I hope that helps you dude

Re: Must have ?

LOL, It's always amuzing. In a new band with two guitarists, within 5 minutes of jamming we usually know immediatly who's the lead and whose the rythym!

The lines between them, however, are ever smaller. I find in most modern two guitarist bands, that they both share the roles. You'll find both guitarists playing the same rythm, but different phrazing, or counter rythym and harmonies, etc. They work together to make the music more sonicly interesting.

While I agree that theory, scales, modes, et al are well worth knowing, when just starting out, most aren't there yet. You can get lost in the theory without concentrating on the music. You do not need all of that to be a great musician. It helps, but if you look on the billboard charts, you'll see it's not necessary. Now if your goal is to be a sessionist/professional guitarist, then knowing all that is critical. If someone says, key of E Lydian, you got recal the tones that give the mode it's sound, the scale & chords & play it immediatly... Knowing all the chords, in many positions, up and down the neck is very critical.

So it depends on what your goals are. Just don't forget to have fun with whatever you do!!
