Power Rhythm

Hey all!
If you could choose your rhythm section from anybody to back you up while playing the biggest show of you life, who would it be? of course not limited to guitar bass drums and keys.

Funny,
I had actually thought of Carter on Drums, but Flea on Bass, and Chick Corea on keys. and while we're at it I'd say stick the horn section from NPG on there as well. but Carter is the man

sounds a major fun time. I've realized that bassists are the most important part of determining the "pocket" in the song. Without a bass part in a song (whether played by a bassist or as just a bass line) there's nothing linking percussion, it also sounds too naked. I play a lotta funk however and Flea and Jaco Pastorius are totally my bass idols...but I can't wait to see this guy.

Re: Power Rhythm

Wow! just stumbled onto this thread and must say, thank you much Dave for the props. Booyashakka! Looking forward to playing out and spreading the jam. I can't wait until y'all hear the drummer me and Dave are playing with right now, Mike Kernicky. He's the drummer on Dave's version of Auld Lang Syne. He and I have known each other since music school days and, if I may say so, together we form a tasty sauce for Dave to swim in with his guitar bombastics! (Does that last sentence even make sense?).

invisibo86, you seem to have the right idea about bass idols and da funk (Jaco is HUGE influence in my playing, as well as Flea). And as Victor Wooten says, "You can't carry a groove if you ain't got no pocket!" You mention NPG, I happened to catch Prince on tour this past August and it blew my mind. Talk about tight!

Re: Power Rhythm

Yeah I just think Jaco and Flea know when to play...and when to lay low (the bass player I'm working with currently has trouble with this). And not coming to Jaco while playing bass is like...well it's like not coming through Steve Vai if you play rock guitar. I went to go see Vic with the Flecktones a shortwhile back and I have to admit I saw 90% of the bass players I know at that show, and he definitely put on the most amazing show! Aside from listening a lot I'm also a gearophile (to a hardcore degree) and I was wondering what kind of gear do you use. Shall we be expecting and crazy bass effects in the concert, or are you all for the notes? I've definitely seen both (refer to above bass players).

Re: Power Rhythm

Oh yes, Jaco redifined electric bass playing on many levels and both he and Flea certainly know when not to play, or as Miles Davis says "knowing when to play the rests."

As far as gear is concerned, I generally play an Ibanex Sound Gear 5 string through a Hartke 3500 and Hartke 4x10 cabinet. When I use effects it revolves around envelope filters (the Q-tron being my preferred pedal). I prefer a more spartan set-up for several reasons, not the least of which is to not take up too much sonic space, which along with knowing when to and not to play fits what I consider the role and function of a bassist in the settings I play in. Everything is context specific though. For Dave's material we'll be playing to backing tracks that fill in alot of sonic space so I don't need go nuts with the effects. On the other hand when I play in a funk trio it becomes my role to do more than just hold down the low end, so I'll thincken it up with some effects, especially when I solo.

For Dave's material, I will try to adhere as closely as possible the effects he uses on the album.

Dave just posted a video of us playing our separate riffs for Long Run if you want to see and hear my rig in action.

Re: Power Rhythm

dude you got a really crisp sound, and you dwarf your bass!! I've always been a fan of Hartke but have never gigged enough on my electric bass to justify the cash. Can't wait to see you guys live!!
