ROTW - Appreciation thread

Hey Dave, I just wanted to let ya know that I have gottan alot out of the few short weeks you've been doin' "ROTW" I find your ideas are sound fresh and new. I've been playing guitar and teaching for 15 years and other instruments (piano and saxaphone) since 1980, including playing with Billy Sheehans' old band mates from Talas, and I own thousands of dollars worth of instructional video's and books probably worth $7,000- $10,000 easy, you name it I own it! (What's even more incredible is that I've actually read and watched them all, yikes!). It's amazing that after all that time when you think I've heard it all, someone will come along and phrase something slightly differently, more tastefully, or say the same thing in a different way and it will just click in my head all of a sudden. In fact, I'm still trying to take the first couple of your riffs and work them into something that sounds like I'm not totally ripping you off.

Thanx for last weeks as well. Far to many instructional vids and books totally neglect rhythm playing. I've found that most guitar players only have chords and rhythm as a background excuse to solo. Which, I think, is part of the problem of why so much guitar music isn't taken seriously by main stream music. That would be a good subject to emphasize for your book, if your still planing to do one.

Thanx for taking the time out of your schedule and giving us some insight into your playing. You are unique and Vai knows it, that's why your there in his band 'cause you aren't copying him and you can hold your own. I'd be intimidated as hell in your position.

And as far as some recent comments made by another member on a different thread, remember this; as Gen. Tommy Franks said, "One doesn't neccessarily have to know anything, in order to have an opinion about it". Quite regularly people don't know anything before forming one either. It's my just my two cents, that most opinions are more a sign of a big EGO than informed opinion.

Music and musicians have a big problem with this, music isn't supposed to be a competition, and even though that's a cliche'ed statement, people still treat it that way. I hear it everyday at my store. I don't know why.

Enough! Thanks again Dude! I can't wait for next weeks ROTW

Hey Andrew.

Thanks for the very kind words. I definitely appreciate it! I'm glad you can find inspiration in the ROTW's and appreciate it.

And you're right about people and opinions. It's amazing isn't it? That's why unless I know what I'm talking about, I keep my opinions to myself.

Happy holidays!

Dave

Re: ROTW - Appreciation thread

Well since this is appreciation, I really should say that above all I appreciate 3 things:

First off, the fact that each riff is long and obviously different to most peoples approaches to solo guitar work. During solo work out's (or even duels if you know as many egotisitcal guitarists as me) its really cool to throw in somethings that a little different, and that stands out.

Secondly, the fact that each ROTW is tabbed out, scored, recording in Audio and Video, 3 times at different speeds for varying abilities, thats just.. wow..

Thirdly the fact that Dave does this every week! Every Wednesday! It'll be a sad day when ROTW ends, as its somethings I guess I've already come to look forward to.

So anyways, before it gets too mushy, thanks a million Dave, keep it going as long as you can and know its means a lot to us.

Merry xmas man.
