steve vs dave
hey dave, I'm not totally sure if it's happened or not, but in the DVD's I've seen and just seeing you guy's live last week, I was wondering why is it that Tony and Steve kinda' battle back and forth, trade lead's and riff's if you will, but I haven't seen you and Steve go at it so to speak. A good example would be in the song "the hell outta here", towards the end where Steve and Tony are really choppin head's. Don't get me wrong, I personally wouldn't have that song performed any other way(it's probaly my favortive performed live) but it would be cool to see you and Steve to duel it out also. Maybe not in the exact same way, maybe on acoustic's just tradin off, I don't know, just a thought and maybe you guy's have done and I just haven't seen it...............later. fret.

Re: steve vs dave
Mainly because Tony's been around for a long time and people want to see him do stuff. So Steve showcases him (and Billy) alot more. But anytime Steve's ready.. I am.

I've been in similar situations. There are GREAT advantages to being with such talent, but do you ever feel overwhelmed? I mean are there moments where you feel like your the "kid" kinda?

Re: steve vs dave
Well, being a guitar player in Vai's band isn't easy. It's easy to be overlooked for obvious reasons. But I do my thing and I'm happy with that. I've done well so far making my own name protrude through my attitude, personality and especially my music.

Re: steve vs dave
well for what it's worth, i think Steve made a wise decision in picking you for his band. From a fan's point of perspective, I would love to see(so would alot of other poeple) trade off's between all three of you, I mean what the hell, you've made it this far, might as well go for it all. Whatever happen's you certainly make a nice addition to this group. appreciate ya' answering back............fret.

Re: steve vs dave
The case of great talents being overlooked has lots of examples. Like John Myung in Dream Theater, that guy is constantly overlooked because
John Petrucci
and
Mike Portnoy
have the spotlight on them and he has an enormous talent.
The same thing happens with what is called the rithm section of Aerosmith... Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford are constantly shadowed by the once called toxic twins.
George Harrison is the most painful and obvious one... constantly pushed aside by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Dave, I´m sure that many people notice you , no matter how many Billys or Tonys are around you, when that people find out you have your own music, they´ll look for it.
Time is your friend Dave, all the time , patience and work you invest now will pay off later.
Vai started playing in a band of a monster called Frank Zappa and now look where he is now, I´m sure with time the same will happen to you.
I hope you remember us when that happens.

"Who's up next? Who's gonna get their head cut?"
Heh, yeah I been there before. Great fun.
I love Get/I'm The Hell Outta Here, the whole four guitar harmonics thing is ace. I'd love to see a three way battle. Maybe this is kinda lame, but maybe Steve challenging both Dave and Tony to play what he plays, so TMac and Dave play it at the same time together. That would be cool.

There's a guy named John Myung in Dream Theater? I haven't heard him in years!

Re: steve vs dave
It certainly felt Dave was to the side, almost in shadow sometimes, but when the time came for Dave to showcase, he did so amazingly! I did expect more back and forth dueling during the concert. I know Dave would certainly hold his musical palette well VS. Steve. All during the show you could feel Dave's rythym so well, that without, Steve couldn't do his thing. IMHO his ability is right up there with TMac & Steve, but he has his own style, that really completes the picture! Both when I saw him on the 22nd, and on the Astoria DVD, I've been floored!
Keep it up Dave! I'm sure you'll be headlining in the years to come!!
My last thoughts as I left the recent show... "To heck with playing as well as Vai, I just wanna be like Dave!" Though that goal is just as lofty!

Lets not under-rate Vai, the guy's still one of my hero's. Not a day goes buy where I dont try and learn some of his stuff.

Lets not get carried away now. Dave is a wonderful musician I agree. But lets be realistic.

Which Part? Val & Gooz..Seriously, I didn't mean he's better than VAI! I just meant he is worthy to be cuttin heads with the man himself.
I honestly don't know anyone who has the mastery over EVERY aspect of the
electric guitar
more than VAI. Steve continually finds new ways to express himself on that instrument! He has a trick back bigger than Santa's sack! I know I'll NEVER come CLOSE to reaching his ability! Thus, it's been too unrealistic for me to have a goal to play at his level. Therefore to desire to be at Dave's level is a much less lofty goal for me personally. That's what I meant by that last line...

Re: steve vs dave
I understand now better what you were getting at. I absolutely agree that Dave is worthy to stand up there with Vai. Vai thinks so and that’s plenty good enough for me. I suppose from your previous post I mistook it to mean that Dave had reached the same level of accomplishment on the instrument as Vai. This is where I misread what you posted. And where I disagreed. But now that is all cleared up.
I think Dave has the ability to take his playing to any level he chooses. He is certainly talented enough. It's really in his hands. No pun intended.
There is just a comfort, a casual familiarity that Vai exudes when he plays. It reminds me of watching SRV or Hendrix play and of something that
Neil Young
said about Hendrix. That he played as though he had just come home after a long and tiresome journey. Like the instrument was his home.

Re: steve vs dave
BCrowell, I find it so depressing to hear young musicians like yourself making comments that they will never be as good as someone like Vai. Success in music is not just how many tricks you have up your sleeve. I turn people on to Vai's music all the time but many of them do not find him talented. It's not about the skill it's about creating a peice of music that the majority of people find appealing.
Guitar players
get to caught up in the bag of tricks and judge other players by their level of skill rather than their writing and presentation of their music. Though Vai has a high level of skill I personally find Daves music to be much more appealing. There is alot of music on Vai's CDs I do not like (so much for his skills). You have heard the trim beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, the same applys to music. You may not have Vai's level of skill, but your goal should not be a Vai clone. Your music should be who you are. Work to profect the music that is in you. Throw the chord charts away, and turn the teaching videos off. Listen to the music that is in your heart then find those notes on the neck of your guitar and play the music that is you. Don't get me wrong the skills are very useful but not as useful as learning to play the music that is in you. God made each one of us unique. That means your music is unique! You have music in you that no one else has and we all won't to hear it! You made the statement that you liked my music very much but I have less skills than you. I have no formal training, I can not read music, I do not know the names of the chords I play and I don't even know the names of the strings on my guitar. I play totally by ear yet you liked my music, so much for skill. I have heard enough of your music to know that it is in you so go for it.
