Valves

Hi Dave,
I was wondering what tubes you use or were using in your Legacy heads.

After many hours of tweaking, the tone I get out of my Legacy is pretty muddy even with the bass dial set very low.
I've heard that different pre amp tubes can give me more clarity. (currently using stock Russian 12ax7s that came with the amp)

I know there are countless options out there so I was just interested to know what you use.

P.S. I'm finding it hard to put STSA back in my CD cabinet. I've had the album since the Melbourne Australia concert and just don't seem to get tired of it...however I am eager to hear a follow up album. Any plans of any more recording?

Re: Valves

Hey Rammers.

For the Legacies.. I haven't done any modding to them. But I agree, they're too muddy.

On my main amp, the VHT Ultralead, I have KT88 power tubes and regular 12AX7's for the preamp tubes. The KT88 power section makes all the difference. If you want detail in the low end and clarity in your lead playing, either get an Ultralead or find an amp that has KT88's. That'll give you a headstart.

I'm glad you're continuing to enjoy STSA. I appreciate it! As for a new cd, it's in the works, but due to extensive touring with Vai in 05, it won't be out until 06. But I'm going to try to get it out in early 06.

Cheers.
Dave

Re: Valves

Hi Dave, Thanks for the info.
I haven't seen any VHT amps in Oz but I'll do some hunting around.
Meanwhile I think I'll do some experimenting with different tubes in my Legacy.
Thanks again and all the best for the upcoming Vai tour.
Regards, Ron

Re: Valves

Hey Dave,
can you tell me a bit about your experiance with the VHT amps? Why you choose them/it and how to ran across it. What kinds of tones can you get out of it? Is the amp very "Marshall-y" or very "Mesa-y"?

Re: Valves

Hey Vamp.

The VHT isn't like a Marshall or Mesa. That's why I chose it. This amp keeps your tone very clear and detailed at any volume.

If you'd like to hear it, it's the only amp I used on my cd. Here's a link to where you can hear some samples (and buy it if you like it) :P
