If playing through other people's solos and ruining little wing counts as upstaging Satch and Vai, then by all means he upstaged them.

How about Jeff Beck? HE could definitely hold his own against Satch and Steve, and show the youngsters a thing or two as well. :

eric clapton would be really cool if he was in the right mood. some of his stuff is really not fit for g3 but based on some of the stuff he has done on other peoples concerts and albums i recon he could pull it off magically.

did anyone see eric play leave my little girl alone on the tribute to steve ray vaughn video or most of his solo's when he was with john mayall

How about Steve Lukather?
He jammed with G3 on the 2001 tour.

I would love to see Allan Holdsworth doing his thing alongside all the others. Or possibly Steve Morse........... Actually thinking about it Al Di Meola might be quite a good aspect because there would be a division between legato and picking players that could get interesting!

If by "Upstage" you mean "overplay," then yes. "Little Wing" wasn't too bad- while it was perhaps a little rude to jump in on Vai's unaccompanied intro (I've only heard it on the CD) the way he did, the pedal steel licks were at least tasteful, and his wankage later on, especially when all three were playing, at elast seemed to work as a "background" part against Vai and Satch's near-unison quotation of the original Jimi solo.

"Voodoo Child (slight return)," on the other hand, was a travesty. Satch and Vai started laying back and playing some sparse bluesy stuff in the middle section, before the next verse- reeeeally cool feel there. and then Yngwie comes in ripping through harmonic minor scale passages... sorta forced the other two G's to match him there, and what was a great bluesy breakdown quickly deteriorated into a pissing contest.

Yngwie's a solid technical player, and I really dug his version of "Red House," but he's gotta learn that, especially when playing with other people, there's a time to lay back and phrase, rather than burn.

I personally hated Clapton's work with John Mayall- he didn't sound very sure of himself, IMO. Cream was good, and I liked a lot of his Derek and the Dominos work, but for me his real pinaccle was with the Howlin' Wolf London Sessions... and even then, I personally feel he's no match for Hubert Sumlin on a good night. But a G3 tour with him might be itneresting- it might get him out of this pop singer/songwrtier thing he's fallen into of late, anyway. And the idea of an "old-school" rock hero on tour with these two does have a certain amount of merit- Beck'd be another great choice, and even Page could be interesting.

Buckethead would be pretty cool ("Colma" is absurdly good chill guitar music), as would gilbert. I also think rusty cooley might be fun, although his name doesn't have the same draw as the other two, as of yet.

Eh, we've got some time- Joe's still on tour, Vai will probably do his own solo tour this summer... '06 at the earliest isn't a bad estimate.
