Your effect chains? Dave?
Hi Dave, i have been wondering how do you chained your effect pedals(may be from racks also)? By order of what first and last? I'm trying to get the best sound out of my effects, so i guess you could help me out

My setup changes depending on the needs of the gig. For this Vai tour, I have many more pedals on the ground than I usually would due to the fact that I didn't bring my Bradshaw rack.
So right now here's the signal chain.
Guitar -> X-wire Transmitter -> X-wire Receiver ->
Ernie Ball volume pedal
-> Dunlop 535Q Wah ->
Digitech Whammy
-> Keeley DS-1 -> Keeley TS-9 -> MXR EVH Phase 90 -> Keeley Compressor -> Front of the head.
In the FX loop, I have my TC G-Force and that's it.
I'll take a pic of the setup tomorrow and post it for you.
Take care.
Dave

?
Thanks in advance Dave !

Dave,
Just wondering why you didn't take the rack. Is that a shipping thing, or is it not suitable for a Vai show?

No I'm not using the VHT buffer, although I could really use it in some of these venues that have noisy electricity.
I listed the Whammy in the chain above.

It's more of a shipping cost thing for the tour. Everyone scaled down their racks but I just decided to bring what was absolutely necessary.
The other element is that the consoles (for monitors and FOH) don't have enough channels for another stereo rig. So I'm running mono which is ok for this gig. Part of being a good band member is knowing where you should sit in the mix. I'm not the main "voice" of the show so I plan accordingly.

Re: Your effect chains? Dave?
Here's a pic of my pedalboard today. I swapped out the Keeley DS-1 for a Keeley TS-9X just to give it a try.

Re: Your effect chains? Dave?
cool! do you normally put the whammy pedal through the input, or is that just to save space from the likeliness another
pedal board
? and where did you get the power supply for yours? the stock one always sticks out and messes with my effects chain.

I have been meaning to change my name to Maverick for ages. My real name and my screen name. I manage a tree nursery in the UK, and I often ask staff for information with the wonderful quote from that film "Talk to me Goose". None have them have actually called me Maverick, despite me threatening to fire all of them.
Back to topic:
Dave, apart from the stereo to mono thing, do you find that you compromise on your tone because of the scaling down. I presume that you can still get all the basic effects that you need, does it affect the quality of the sound very much? I know there is a lot of discussion of racks over pedals etc, it would be interesting to hear from a pro actually facing that issue.
Racks or not I imagine you guys would still rock if you were banging your instrument with tin cans and rubber chickens for new effects (if Vai starts doing that I want royalties BTW
).

I usually put the Whammy pedal in a loop with the
rack system
. That way when it's not being used, the signal isn't being passed through the unit.
The Whammy is the biggest tone sucker / noise generator pedal I deal with so keeping it inline and to the front of the head is detrimental to the the tone. If you must keep it inline, I suggest you go to
www.robertkeeley.com
and order a true bypass looper.
The power supply for the Whammy is stock.

I try to never compromise tone no matter what gear I'm using. That's why I spent a lot of time developing tone just with a guitar to the front of the head. Once you get the tone in your fingers to come out (yes your fingers really do have a tone), then adding in anything in between your guitar and the amp should only compliment it more. But the root of your tone should just be you and a guitar to an amp.

You can read about all the Keeley mods on Robert's website. But in my experience, if you get any of his modded pedals and A/B them with the stock version using the exact same settings, the Keeley pedals are all soncially impoved, better tone, less signal degradation, more gain, more volume, etc.
For solos, I just set the TS-9 at a volume slightly higher than unity gain and set the drive a bit higher to make the solo cut more and sustain a bit better.

Like the Keeleys, eh?
I'll struggle along with my standard DS-1 and Crybaby then, until I'm well enough known to be given em for free (or do you still have to pay for them?).
