Your New Amp Setup

Dave I notice you are using a Mesa this tour. I have been toying with the idea of either a Mesa or the Legacy. I'm not getting the tone I want from my Carvin MTS. How do you like the Mesa compared to the Legacy. Is the Mesa giving you better performance and tone than the VHT. I had never thought much about VHT until I heard it on your CD. Also is there going to be a DVD released for this tour?

Re: Your New Amp Setup

Both the Stiletto and the LEgacy are going to give you better tone than the MTS series. No offense, but the MTS was an instant "pass" for me when I tried one.

The Stiletto (to me) is a great amp. One of the only amps I can plug into and feel comfortable right away. I wasn't like that with the Legacy. Both are nice, but obviously, my choice was the Stilleto.

Now, Stiletto or VHT. The VHT is still my fav amp. Simply because of the power tubes. The VHT has KT88, the Stiletto has EL34s. The KT88's hold the low end together with amazing clarity and let the lead notes sing out with total detail. But it's very unforgiving.

The Stiletto is awesome though.. or, I wouldn't be using it. It's got amazing tone, holds the low end together great and the lead tones are very smooth and warm. I use a Keeley DS-1 for the leads just for more gain and sustain. It's a great combination. I highly recommend it.

A dvd from this new tour? I believe so.

Hey,

When you were out at Austraila last with Mr Vai, I Notice you were using marshall. Is that right?, if so what model was it? or was it your good old VHT with a marshall cab.

Thanks Dave! Looks like i'm off to the center for a Stiletto demo. I have always wanted a Mesa anyway. Hope they give you some more solo spots on the next DVD.

Shep.

I was using Marshalls that whole tour b/c we couldn't bring our own amps. I used a different Marshall every night, The one I like the most was the TSL (the 3 channel head). It was great for rhythm playing, but it left a lot to be desired in the clean and lead sections.

The JCM 2000's never really lived up to amp's like the jcm 800 or the plexi no where near as warm. It's a shame marshall can't bring out a 2 channel jcm 800.lol

yes, i know there's a 900 but it's just like the DSL, good but not great.

Thank's Dave

Re: Your New Amp Setup

I enjoy amps that have really long involved names..like Triple Super Lead. It just sounds like something that should be worth such a long name.

Re: Your New Amp Setup

Dave, do you get to pick your own sound / tone or does Steve dictate what you'll be putting out?

And if you know, does the same apply to TMaC?

Re: Your New Amp Setup

Steve definitely has nothing to do with how I sculpt my tone, nor Tmac's. Tone first of all is how your fingers touch the instrument, then it's years of finding the right kind of guitar that has the right combination of woods, strings, pickups, etc.. played through the right amp that has the right kind of tubes, etc.. then finally, playing through the right kind of cab with the right kind of speakers, etc.

Alot of times tone is something most people can't find. Good luck!

hey

i'm just talking about the new reissue (2203). it has 2 channels but you can't switch them or make a switch to do it, which is a shame.

i don't know the 2210 or the 2205 so i can't coment on them.

i love the 2203, it's the best.

Re: Your New Amp Setup

I just wondered if you had ever dialed in a certain sound for a performance or soundcheck and has Steve freak out and say NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!.
