My favorite is the Butterfly Effect 1.
That's very impressive to me.
What about you guys?

I thought that movie was great but then again Woody Allen movies are usually superior. Cate Blanchett had the role of a career in that one. It was my favorite I saw this year. Last year Argo was my favorite and both movies did well.

Often what I like and what the Academy likes are at odds with each other.

Wow so many great ones above, I love so many movies that it's hard to pick one, I'll categorise:

Animation - Either the classic Disney Fantasia or Spirited Away

Action - Zatoichi - An action movie that tells a great set of stories and is beautifully shot - a combination that only Takeshi Kitano can produce.

Biography - Chaplin - Robert Downey Jr at his best

Documentary - The Fog of War - It's interesting to see a man almost nonchalantly re-examine decisions which cost 100s of 1000s of lives (some of his own men and many more of the enemy). The man had a world full of regrets and learned some interesting lessons that should be heard, but seeing a very old Robert Mc Namara discuss the past almost like a day at the office was slightly disturbing.

Comedy - Life of Brian - Python at their best and a brilliant parody of religious animosity, terrorism & socialism.

Horror - Has to be the original Japanese version of Ring - the first horror movie that left me scanning the room after watching it alone on a dark winter night. A movie called Shutter comes a close second.

Music Biography - Shine - great movie with a magnificent actor

Sciene Fiction - Blade Runner - a great adaptation of the short novel by Philip K. Dick. This was probably the last big Scifi movie to use totally analogue effects. Immersive with amazing attention to detail.

Western - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - a very simple plot, terrible dialogue, average acting, but somehow lifted by one of the best movie scores of all time. Spagetti Westerns don't get any better than this.

War - Das Boot - it just immerses you in the lives of the crew, submarine warfare and the utter vulnerability when things don't go according to plan.
